Pros & Cons of a One Console World

Posted by hiphopgamer | Real Talk with the HipHopGamer | Saturday 21 February 2009 11:56 pm

There’s been a buzzing going around the net of how it would be if there was only one console in the world. Many fanboys also state that their console should be the only console to exist. Aside from the people who are and aren’t fanboys, there is also some developers talking about it, such as Todd Howard; you may know him as executive producer and game director of Bethesda Softworks or better as the guy behind the brilliant GOTY 2008 Fallout 3 or GOTY 2006 Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. All of these people have the same interests. For a one console world unfortunately there would be pros and cons, much like there is in everything else. Things people may think they know what they want now, but in the end, they might very well regret it. Which company would get to deliver this console? Let’s recap on some of these things; they may come obvious to some.

The Pros
1. Probably the most annoying one which is why it is placed first. Fanboys everywhere would die, as people would be forced to like the same creation. No one will admit in real life they are fanboys, but over the internet, the keyboard is a powerful weapon and this would without doubt bring peace to the world of gamers.
2. All gamers would be able to experience all games instead of just half because of exclusivity rights. I can also add in this number, that all gamers would be treated equal with DLC. Developers now a days are treating their valuable and loyal customers bad because they don’t own the right console; do they see one half of their fan base less important than the other? As of now, that’s how it looks!
3. Different but similar to number 2; there would be more games seeing how people wouldn’t have to decide between two or even 3 consoles. The developers of the console would have all the money and be able to publish more games and worry less of a recession or worse.
4. This can be seen in two ways, here is the Pro version of the statement. Game developers would want to make better games since the competition now would be tripled; they would most definitely want your money over their rivals. Game developers would also have an easier job focusing their entire team on coding the game for one platform instead of 3.

The Cons
1. This would be the negative perspective of pro number four. Game developers but most importantly, game publishers would feel less worried about competition that they would see no reason to make a decent game, they would just want to squeeze as much money out of you as they want. They would be able to do this since there would be no one showing them up from another third or first party publisher.
2. There would have to be a company to take the prize of manufacturing the console, and whom better than Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft; an unknown company or an unknown company relating to gaming would probably not do as good. For the first 2 years of the new console, the fanboys would brag out loud saying, “Our console beat your console, now your console is dead!”
3. Issues with games online or offline would be more hectic with all games on one platform that it might be a while before they would actually fix anything.

As you can see, the Pros overpower the cons, unfortunately, competition is good. If we didn’t have competition you wouldn’t see the amazing XBL experience and you wouldn’t have free PSN gaming. There is many things wrong with the way the industry is today, but we can fix it and live peacefully; the reason this would never happen though is because of fanboys. They keep the competition alive.

How will the Killzone 2 Servers Hold up?

Posted by bakerboy | Real Talk with the HipHopGamer | Saturday 21 February 2009 4:21 am

Let me preface this by saying that you would be hard pressed to find anyone that is anticipating the launch of Killzone 2 more than me. But based on my history with Sony,(and game launches in general) I can’t help but to anticipate being left with nothing to do but wait for the servers to be fixed next weekend. Call me a pessimist if you want, but based on my past experiences, I’m only being real.

It all started for me on August 29th, 2007. After getting lucky enough to participate in the Warhawk beta, my excitement for the actual release was through the roof. My buddy and I, a fellow by the name of CastleKingSide, had completely run amuck in the beta by completely demolishing everyone we faced. So of course we were absolutely stoked upon the release of the actual game. It all started off fine, you know business as usual. That first night we logged about 7 hours of play and were sure that when we woke up the next day our names would be at the top of the leaderboards. To our surprise we weren’t ranked anywhere. Not only were we not ranked, but our stats weren’t counted at all. The problem wasn’t isolated, there were reports all over the web of people’s stats not being counted, ranks were being reset etc. This whole Warhawk debacle continued for about 4 weeks until Dylan Jobe and company finally cleaned things up in late September; an entire month after the release. Many people completely lost interest in the game and sales suffered because of this.  Wow Sony, just wow.

Next on my list is the release of Call of Duty 4. Everyone remembers that weekend. Everything was cool for the first day or two, but as soon as the weekend hit, deja vu. Stats not being counted, people being unable to connect to a game. Although I’m not completely sure if 360 owners encountered the same issues, this was a big deal with Playstation owners. On the other hand, I must commend Infinity Ward for promptly resolving the issue and allowing users to proceed with the fragfest the following Monday.

Third, there was the infamous release of Rainbow Six Vegas 2. All I have to say is “Wow”. This was hands down the most broken launch ever. And from my knowledge, these issues were PS3 specific. For almost 2 weeks users were completely unable to connect to anybody. I remember people trying any and everything in a desperate attempt to connect with one another. Then there was the whole anomaly with people’s faces being green when you used the face implementation feature. But that is completely separate topic in and of itself. Whether this was Sony’s or Ubisoft’s fault, it didn’t really matter. Things like this just shouldn’t happen. Once again, this debacle ruined sales for the Playstation 3 version, with many users jumping ship for the 360 version instead.

Last but not least we have Socom Confrontation. Need I say more? A highly anticipated, exclusive title that launched with more problems than one can shake a stick at. From not being able to connect to your friends, to game incapacitating lag once you were finally connected. This was coupled with the fact that may features advertised on the back of the box were completely left out. How do these issues get past quality assurance? Maybe we should email Microsoft for the answer to that last question.

Well, this is why we study history. It is a must that we learn from our past mistakes. Hopefully Sony has learned from these past mishaps and are ready to seize the moment with the Killzone 2 release. Because we all know that if this launch even resembles one of these past launches to the smallest degree, there will be a neverending media frenzy predicting the demise of Sony.

Xbox 360, a Glimpse into the Future

Posted by hiphopgamer | Real Talk with the HipHopGamer | Saturday 21 February 2009 1:49 am

Recently there’s been a lot of talk about Microsoft picking up 3DV systems. This would be implemented onto their future console known as of now, the Xbox 720. If rumors are true, Microsoft’s next console will utilize motion sensing in a true next-generation way. Hell, maybe it can even surpass the Wii with its outstanding motion controls.

If for some reason you don’t know, the PS3 has motion controls as well; unfortunately, developers haven’t been able to utilize this feature to the best of its experience. Back in 2002, Sony presented the Eye Toy in which your body movement is the controller. Although a ground breaking idea, people weren’t really feeling it back then. The games weren’t that good, or at least good enough when compared to the other PS2 titles. People were more focused on all those AAA titles Sony was pushing. Sadly, Sony dropped the ball with the Eye Toy; it was not promoted right and it got pushed to the corner of the room. Few developers would make games for it which in the end made for a cheapened experience.

Microsoft is looking to revive this technology now and take advantage of its full potential, just as Wii has done. If Microsoft can implement this feature on 360 it would be great seeing how massive the 360 fan base is. If they use this feature on a new console, it would be successful only at a competitive price.
