Sony Should Scrap Home

Posted by bakerboy | Real Talk with the HipHopGamer | Monday 23 February 2009 6:13 pm

Much was made of the GDC 07 footage that unveiled Playstation Home to the public for the first time. The video promised the ability to share music, pictures, and videos that the users had stored on their hard drives with other members of home. Furthermore, the ability to launch into any game via the service was also advertised as a standard feature. Playstation users were estatic. Claims of the downfall of Xbox Live were all over the web. Fast forward to February 23rd, 2009. Almost a full 2 years after the unveiling, where do we stand?

While the thrill of a great single player campaign will likely never be replaced, many gamers have embraced the importance of playing together. Social networking has become a phenomenon on the web and and has naturally made its way over to the gaming medium. But Is the pursuit of the perfect social gaming worth 2 years of hard work and millions of dollars of R&D? Well, it depends on who you ask. If you ask an economist, he or she would probably respond by saying “It depends on what other things/features you would give up to develop the project”. This is an example of opportunity cost. An example of this would be when Microsoft gave $50 million for the GTAIV DLC. Most people exclaimed that this money could have been used for a new IP. But wait, doesn’t the same thing go for Sony? What do you think Sony gave up to push Home out in time for it to remain relevant? Maybe an exclusive or two? The Getaway and Eight Days say hello. While it isn’t exactly clear what caused the cancellation of these two titles, the fact that no company(be it Sony or Microsoft) has unlimited resources undoubtedly has something to do with it. Thus the title of this article.

Of course there are many that argue for the existence of Home and exclaim how useful it is; including this guy. Those arguments are pretty unconvincing. The billiards tables in the bowling alley could easily be offered in the Playstation Store for free, along with the bowling game and the arcade titles. The trailers shown in the theater could be provided via the Playstation Store(like they were before) and be shown in high def without the pixelation and the screen-inside-of-screen look. This also goes for the chess game in the mall; Sony could simply provide this game for free via the Playstation Store. This would save the gamer all the time that it takes to start Home and load up all of the spaces. There is no need to even mention the Uncharted and Far Cry 2 spaces, since they are utterly useless.

So what’s the fix? The argument to make here for its existence is the amount of money that Sony has already sunk into the project. This is coupled with the fact that they are making money off of the items provided in the mall. But what about all the money that they are spending maintaining the servers for home? Along with the funds it takes to pay the employees. There is without a doubt a resounding legion of Playstation supporters that just want the rumored 2.7. Sony, just cut your losses short, scrap home, and use those resources to further develop the XMB.

360 Challenges the PS3’s Cell Processor Power with Alan Wake

Posted by hiphopgamer | Real Talk with the HipHopGamer | Monday 23 February 2009 5:49 pm

Sony’s been talking about the power of their cell processor since day one. The power is yet to be unlocked but there are many games beginning to tap into its real potential (Seen in Killzone 2). Ever since the PS3 came out, Sony was touting about how powerful it would be and how the cell processor would allow game developers the opportunity to showcase games at a quality the competitors (360) couldn’t match. The problem lied with the notoriously hard cell to develop for. But enough about the PS3; I’m here to talk about another piece of art known as Alan Wake.

The Xbox 360 has been out for 3 years now and has shown great quality titles over that life span. Microsoft was able to deliver great titles from 1st party developers as well as 3rd party developers that looked amazing running exclusively on the 360 such as Forza Motorsport 2, Gears of War 1& 2, Mass Effect, and Halo 3. Sony’s machine has shown Killzone 2, Uncharted, Resistance 2; these games step it up another level and gamers are starting to see the graphics barrier rise on Sony’s console. However, Microsoft always finds a way to answer to their competitors as well as their fans; now they are also answering to all the people who don’t believe Xbox360 can run something that looks near flawless with the upcoming and eagerly anticipated release of Alan Wake. We may finally see a game on the 360 exclusively that can challenge Sony’s cell processor that will show everyone what the 360 really packs.

Alan Wake seems to be in its mid stages of development if it is to be released this year, but we still haven’t seen much about the game. The few bits that we’ve seen on the game have been amazing and leaving us craving for more. If Microsoft can deliver this game with its pre-rendered visuals as real-time, then it will certainly blow Killzone 2 out of the water. All we can do now is wait for its release, or hopefully we have a demo treatment from Microsoft.

Take a look at the footage below and prepared to be blown away.

Pete Hines Gives the First Details On Fallout 3’s “The Pit” DLC

Posted by PAYBACK-IRONMAN | Real Talk with the HipHopGamer | Monday 23 February 2009 12:11 pm

In a recent interview with Pete Hines on MTV’s Multiplayer log, he dropped the first details on Fallout 3’s second DLC add on “The Pit.” Heres what he had to say:

-Whereas the first Fallout DLC “Operation Anchorage” was heavy on gunplay and light on plot, The Pitt will not be. It’s more plot-oriented with a return to the post Apocalypse setting we all know and love.

-It will be about as long as “Operation Anchorage.”

-It’s not a “simulation,” so weapons and items will be taken from The Pitt’s Pittsburgh to Fallout 3’s Washington DC.

-Once you enter The Pitt, you won’t be able to return to D.C. until you’re finished.

-It’s even more bleak than Fallout 3. (Hard to believe, I know!)

-The “auto-axe” weapon you see in the screenshot above is sweeeeet.

All this sounds great but I was really expecting this add on to be longer then Operation Anchorage. But still this looks awesome and I can’t wait untill March when this is released on Xbox Live.

Uncharted 2 Eyes-On: Best Looking Console Game Ever? Sony’s Power Is Proven

When we first caught a glimpse of Uncharted, it was through a series of leaked photos that showed off the game’s insanely detailed environments. When Naughty Dog revealed our strapping character hanging off a tree mouths of gamers dropped everywhere, be it from awe or jealousy. There’s no doubt that Uncharted was an impressive achievement considering how early into the PlayStation 3’s life it was released. Granted, there were still some spots to be improved on…and that’s exactly what Naughty Dog has done with the sequel.

Normally, it’s the gameplay that I’ll rant about first, but in this case, I have to make a special exception for just how amazing the visuals are of the sequel. What’s even more impressive is that the product I saw was still in its pre-alpha stage, which means there’s still a lot of work left to do. But technical jargon aside, what I immediately noticed about Uncharted 2 was that despite its early state, the framerate was exceptionally smooth. What I noticed next floored me the most, though, and that’s just how absolutely stunning the textures are.

Where as the first game sported nice textures, this one seems to be leagues ahead of the original. And then there are the animations, which still have work left, but also look marvelous. When I walked away from the game I had no doubt in my mind that Uncharted 2 is without question the best looking title in development right now, and not just for the PlayStation 3, that includes the Xbox 360. People have been making many “Crysis” comparisons in the past with the original Uncharted, Gears of War 2, and Killzone 2, but none of them held a candle to Crytek’s behemoth. And that’s where Uncharted 2 comes in as the first console game that is truly worthy of the comparison. It’s powerful stuff, folks.

The gameplay retained that of the original, so you still have that feeling that you’re playing a mixture of Indiana Jones and Gears of War, which is awesome. But where Uncharted differs from Gears is in its hand-to-hand mechanics, as Naughty Dog gave Nate an assortment of abilities that allow him to engage in combat when he’s weaponless, allowing to him to disarm, as well as take-down. This aspect of the game has been improved on, as Naughty Dog has implemented a deeper hand-to-hand system where timing and precision is more crucial to combat, otherwise you’ll leave yourself vulnerable to a hit. You’ll be able to perform counter attacks, as will the enemy when you’ve mistimed your button press, and perform a variety of different takedown animations – all of which are brutal and really cool.

Another big feat for the sequel is a feature that allows Nate to scale the environments in new ways. Now Nate can climb and scale walls with more freedom, allowing him more movement along the object he’s scaling, in addition to retaining his previous assortment of abilities. The other notable new feature gives Nate the ability to lift and flip furniture over and use it as cover when you’re being rained with bullets. You can’t use the same object for an extensive period of time, so you’ll likely need to move on to find new cover.

The enemy A.I. has been enhanced, and to offset those enhancements, they’ve also been balanced. For example, now your opponents can spot you from their peripheral vision. And unlike say, Metal Gear, if an enemy thinks he saw something, he’ll run with that instinct and come looking for you, going as far as climbing walls or jumping from ledge to ledge. And if he doesn’t find you, he’ll remain extra alert.

In order to balance this heightened sense, Naughty Dog has listened to complaints fans of the original game made regarding the amount of bullets it took to kill an enemy. Where as Uncharted required as many as six bullets to take someone down, no matter the armor (or lack thereof) they were wearing, Uncharted 2 is much more realistic in that regard. Regular, unarmored enemies can be taken down in 1-3 shots, where as armored foes can require anywhere between 1-5, and so on. The amount of bullets you’ll shell out (pun intended) will depend on the attire worn by the enemy.

One big question remains and Naughty Dog has yet to answer it: will there be co-op gameplay? Seeing as how the game now boasts two armed characters, Nate and Chloe, it’d make perfect sense that Uncharted 2 boast such an option. While Naughty Dog won’t confirm it, there’s a damn good chance it’s coming and seeing as how Uncharted 2 boasts controls similar to Gears, this could be the first grand co-op action experience PlayStation 3 owners are given.

Look for Uncharted 2 to hit this Fall 09.

WTF?? Microsoft Asks Some Laid Off Workers To Send Back Part Of Their Severance [Letter Inside]

Posted by hiphopgamer | Real Talk with the HipHopGamer | Monday 23 February 2009 3:08 am

SOURCE – http://www.thisis50.com/profiles/blogs/wtf-microsoft-asks-some-laid

Talk about adding insult to injury. Apparently Microsoft has inadvertently overpaid severance to some of its recently laid off employees, and is now asking for some of the money back. It’s unclear how many of the 1,400 employees laid off last month were affected, but we’ve confirmed that it wasn’t a single isolated incident. We’re also hearing that some employees may have been underpaid as well.
While the payroll error must be irritating in and of itself to these laid off workers (severance is a sensitive subject), it appears that Microsoft HR isn’t even bothering to explain how it happened (employees are instructed to call the office, which is closed for the weekend, if they want to know the details). Given that it was Microsoft HR that screwed this up in the first place, you’d think they’d at least include the calculations they made and point out where the error took place.
