As much as I love the Playstation 3, it really hurts to admit that HOME is/was a failure. I understand that it is still in the beta stage but the features HOME was advertised to do three years ago, have yet to show up. Streaming video and audio in my apartment is missing in action, the trophy room is cleverly absent, and game launching works for a hand full of games. SWEET! The load times are consistently long between home spaces. And we have six, that’s right, six bowling lanes. YES! The theater that loops 30 second commercials is really swell as well. Who wants to watch “movies” in a theater these days?! No, no, give me those awesome army music videos that take all of three minutes to stream.
With all this mentioned, I will pose a question; What do we do in HOME?
Do we….
Socialize? Oh yea…because I love texting my dialogue on the overly slow virtual keyboard, and I most certainly love my thumbs getting tangled on the useless (and overpriced) controller keypad. It makes perfect sense that gamers go into home to ’socialize,’ but when communication itself is not convenient it begs the question. Also, in the case of voice chat…wait….what voice chat?
Play games? Oh yea…because I love playing a really dumb downed version of echochrome. I also love ice breaker; game of the year material right there. Bowling is utterly pointless, because you can’t ever find a game that is open…because there are only six freaking lanes! And when you finally do get to bowl, you ask yourself, “Why the hell did I want to bowl to begin with?” Billiards? Dude, the GTA4 minigame of billiards was much deeper than the HOME version. And that’s sad.
Use HOME for extrinsic rewards? Oh yea…because I love virtual tee-shirts and rainbow shoelaces. Look, I’ll be the first to admit it, I am a trophy whore. And sure, all trophies consist of are virtual (meaningless) awards that say, “Good Job to you sir, you beat this game on the hardest difficulty…now go show it off and brag.” Besides bragging rights and trophy XP levels, there is not much you can do with them. Sure, I’d love to trade out my trophy XP level of 10 in exchange for INFAMOUS for free. Or Motorstorm Pacific rift. That’s what extrinsic rewards are, not new SFIV shirts for free. The fact of the matter is this; no one in their right mind is going to pick up SFIV for the PS3 because if they unlock trophies, they also get new virtual clothes in home! No. They will pick up a game for whatever system they feel most comfortable with, they like better, or whatever ones their friend has it on. No one cares about virtual clothes, or furniture as rewards for picking up the game and playing it. Until Microsoft or Sony start rewarding players with free Downloadable games, or disc based games, we gamers just simply don’t care. Give us what gamers want…free games, free DLC, free movies. Only then will we be persuaded to pick up a game for “your” console.
**edit: To those who are saying, “It is not sopuused to be a system seller.” Here you go..this is sony declaring HOME to be a system seller.
