The Developer’s Eye – Spec Operation Presents: MLB 09 The Show
Is It Time For The Season Opener?
Platform: Playstation 3, Playstation 2, PSP
Players: 1-4 Players
Developer: SCEA
My Score: 9.5/10
Gameplay: With the new baseball season starting, it’s time for yet another baseball game. MLB 09: The Show fixes quite a few things that MLB 08 had some issues with. Batting and pitching is about the same, and fielding is too. You cannot control the arm strength of outfielders as you try to catch a man running home…and that could be a huge annoyance and also, it could be a major game changer. MLB 09 upgraded the previous Road To The Show to Road To The Show 3.0. Also the new “Progression Batting Performance” gives the game what other games don’t. “Progression Batting Performance” allows the batters to bat according to their status in the current game, so if the player have been on a hitting streak, chances are that the streak is going to continue.
Graphics: The graphics of this game is simply outstanding, no baseball game comes closer. (Sorry 2K Sports) Players look like their actually in your living room. The stadiums look so detailed and realistic. Even the fans look like they are enjoying themselves. This game will continue to look great 7 years from now.
Sound: If you have ever been to a baseball game, prepare to relive those moments. The players talk, argue, and of course cheer. Fans root for their favorite teams, and the commentators don’t repeat the same lines too often. Can you ask for anything else?
The Developer‘s Eye: Using the same engine as MLB 08, SCEA has set a new milestone is terms of both graphics and performance. The smaller version of the engine is used for the PSP, which shows that the PSP is out long forgotten. The Playstation 2 version of the engine seems too exact to its pervious brother MLB 08. The 3 engines surprises people on the limits on the console. The Playstation 3 version has improved A.I. performance and no game gets better than that. The Playstation 2 version has the really minor improvements in terms of performance, but the graphics are not going to get any better. The PSP version shows that the PSP is only getting started and more surprises are yet to come in the future versions.
Online: I don’t understand how anyone could play online without having small issues of lag. Batting is impossible most of the time and the pitcher would have about 9 strikeouts by the end of the 6th inning. Although online gaming is a fairly bad, you would not be online much but more busy playing Road To The Show 3.0.
Final Thoughts: When MLB 08 was released, I only kept asking myself “how can this get better?” MLB 09:The Show is the best baseball game I’ve played. MLB 2K9 does not come close to MLB 09, not even by a long shot. This is one game that should not be missed.

Is it smart for third party developers to cater to one console?
Introduction:
The console war between Xbox 360 and PS3 becomes a heated argument everyday (between the fanboys at least), but are third developing companies showing more favoritism towards one console over the other?
Sales and Developers:
Let’s talk about sales for a brief moment, PS3’s sales in the North American and European markets are not as good when compared to the Xbox 360’s. Not saying it’s bad number, but it’s just not as high as the 360. With that being said, third developers see those numbers between both consoles and make the decision (usually) to lean more towards the Xbox 360. Most of the editors that write their articles about multi-platform titles selling better on the 360, are usually basing it off the sales it received in those regions. Another important aspect I want to point out is the prices of the PS3 and Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 has different prices for its Arcade, 60GB and Elite models 199, 299 and 399 respectively. PS3’s prices for the 80GB and 160GB models are 399 and 499 respectively. It is worth noting that the PS3’s 160GB model includes Uncharted and Pain. At the moment the Xbox 360 has the cheapest next-generation console on the market, so it makes since for it to sell more than it’s competition.
Now back top the topic, from a third developer perspective, it’s a very wise decision to make a game for a console that has wide consumer base and not only that, the cheapest console on the market. According to some developers, such as Yves Guillemot chief executive for Ubisoft, publishers are satisfied when a console drops in price because “Anytime a console manufacturer reduces the price, software publishers benefit”. So we can see why some third parties enjoy using the 360 as it lead platform instead of the the PS3.
But to cater to one and leave the other out…..hmmmm….I don’t know about that one. Let’s analyze the situation for a quick moment, Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft all have first and second party developers,(well Sony and Nintendo do) that work exclusively with each system. Let me explain how the developing process works for all consoles on the market. “In the video game industry, a first-party developer is a developer that is part of a company that actually manufactures a video game console. First-party developers may either use the name of the company itself, like Nintendo; have a specific division name like Sony’s Polyphony Digital; or have formerly been an independent studio before being acquired by the console manufacturer, such as Rare or Naughty Dog.” “A second-party developer is a developer who, while being a separate entity from any console manufacturer, is tied to a specific one usually through contract or partial ownership and makes games specifically for that console manufacturer.” Examples:
- Microsoft
- no current examples
”A third-party developer is a developer not directly tied to the primary product that a consumer is using, although some, such as Insomniac Games, may have exclusive publishing agreements or other business relationships with a particular manufacturer while maintaining independence.” The primary product may be hardware or software. So it really makes no sense for any third developer to cater to one system, unless they have exclusive publishing agreements like Insomniac has with Sony or they’re getting extra funds from one of the manufacturing companies.
Unforgivable ports:
More evidence to prove my argument, is when consoles receive crappy ports. It’s no secret by now that PS3 gets the short end of the stick when it comes to multi-platform games. According to some developers the PS3 architecture is difficult to grasp, so multi-platform title tend to suffer on the PS3 console. Third developers are in the position to produce a game to the best of their ability on any console they chose to make the game on, if one console is indeed to hard to understand, they should think about making a exclusive for another.
Is it smart for third developers to cater to one console?:
In conclusion, I really would like to know what you guys think, personally, (if it’s true) I think it’s wrong, regardless of what system the consumer chose, they should be able to enjoy the game on whatever console.

Metal Gear Solid 5 Could Be Bigger Than Ever

GDC09 has been one of the best gaming conferences ever done. All the excitements that have been made such as Crytek announcing CryEngine3 on consoles, God of War 3 Gameplay trailer and many more.
The one thing people mostly looked forward to was Hideo Kojima announcing Metal Gear Solid 5 for the PS3. I mean how astonishing was that, huh, Kojima explaining what he wanted to do with the next MGS series, people where surprised and shocked.
And also this time you won’t be playing as Snake since his old and all, you will instead be playing as Raiden, yes everyone’s all time favourite, he is a great ninja, with all those moves he can do I mean it’s crazy.
So I think the next MGS will be much better and bigger, Kojima has explained to everyone at GDC that he will be focusing more on the singleplayer than the multiplayer.
Another thing is that he will shorten the cut-scenes and focus more on the Gameplay; I mean if he doesn’t then the game would be more of a movie then a game.
So yea the game is going to be superior, the graphics, gameplay and the storyline, I believe Kojima could push Metal Gear Solid 5 to the bar.
Tiger returns to winning at Bay Hill
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP)—Tiger Woods had not felt such an adrenaline rush in nine months, especially when he stood over a 12-foot birdie putt Sunday at Bay Hill with only enough sunlight remaining for one last shot.
It made Woods forget that it had been nine months since he played under so much pressure.
And then he made golf remember the magic it had been missing.
With cameras flashing in the approaching darkness, Woods delivered another rock-star moment by making a birdie on the final hole to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational by one shot and match the largest comeback in his PGA Tour career.
“It feels good to be back in contention, to feel the rush,” Woods said. “It’s been awhile, but God, it felt good.”
It sure looked that way.
Just like last year, when Woods made a 25-foot birdie on the final hole at Bay Hill to win by one, he crouched and backpedaled as the putt rolled toward the cup. But instead of slamming his cap to the ground, he gave a roundhouse fist pump and ran into the arms of caddie Steve Williams, who lifted him off the ground in celebration.
Welcome back, Tiger.
“Last year … there wasn’t any big comeback or anything. I was out there just competing as usual,” Woods said. “This time, it was a little bit different. I hadn’t been in the mix since the U.S. Open, so it was neat to feel the heat on the back nine again.”
Starting the final round five shots behind, Woods closed with a 3-under 67 for a one-shot victory over hard-luck Sean O’Hair. It was the third time he won at Bay Hill with a birdie putt on the 18th hole, and this uphill putt was the easiest of all.
But it was just as sweet, especially walking off the green to see a beaming tournament host.
“What was it I told you last year?” Palmer said as he grabbed Woods by the shoulder.
Palmer has seen enough of Woods to know what to expect. Woods won at Bay Hill for the sixth time, the fourth PGA Tour event he has won at least that often.
Woods had not been atop the leaderboard since he won the U.S. Open in a 19-hole playoff last June. He had reconstructive surgery on his left knee a week later, and missed the next eight months.
With two indifferent results, there were questions whether he would be ready for the Masters in two weeks.
Not anymore.
Woods donned the blue blazer that goes to the Bay Hill winner. That could go a long way toward winning another jacket at Augusta National, different color.
“Certainly, this win definitely validates all the things I’ve been trying to do,” Woods said.
O’Hair made only one birdie and closed with a 73, but he steadied himself along the back nine until a crucial mistake on the 16th hole, when he went at the flag with Woods in the rough. His 7-iron came up short and into the water, leading to a bogey.

“I think what happened is when the sun was going down a little bit, I guess that kind of proved to me that the ball wasn’t quite going as far,” O’Hair said.
He might be right, for Woods ran into the same problem a hole later. He posed over a 4-iron that he thought was flush, tongue hanging out of his mouth like Michael Jordan when he knew a shot was going in. This one plugged under the lip of the front bunker, and Woods made bogey to fall into a tie.
That set up the dramatic finish with only minutes of daylight remaining, thanks to a two-hour rain delay in the morning.
It was the second straight year that O’Hair had to watch Woods celebrate. They were in the final group a year ago when Woods made his big birdie putt to beat Bart Bryant. This one stung even more.
“It’s just a little bit disappointing that I couldn’t close it,” O’Hair said.
Woods finished at 5-under 275 and won $1.08 million for his 66th career victory. Only once in his career has Woods failed to win a PGA Tour even in the three months leading to the Masters, but more Bay Hill magic took care of that.

Zach Johnson shot 69 and finished third, although he was treated to quite a show playing in the last group.
“I tried to stay in my own world, and for the most part I did that,” Johnson said. “It’s kind of hard when you’re seeing what you’re seeing. Obviously Tiger, when he needs to step up, he does it. It was impressive to watch.”
Woods was running out of holes until he came up with two clutch putts, the kind he has made throughout his career.
The most pivotal came at the 14th, when he was one shot behind and caught yet another plugged lie under the lip of a bunker. Woods did well to blast out to just over 12 feet, while O’Hair had 15 feet for birdie. Make it, and he could go up by three.
O’Hair narrowly missed, and Woods holed his putt for par. On the next hole, Woods made a 25-foot birdie putt to tie for the lead.
There were three lead changes over the final three holes, and a predictable winner.
It was a struggle from the start for O’Hair.
He didn’t hit a fairway until the sixth hole, and he didn’t have a birdie putt inside 30 feet until the ninth hole. The game was on after a two-shot swing on the third hole, when O’Hair missed the green to the right and made bogey, and Woods made an 8-footer for his second straight birdie to close within two shots.
They were separated by one shot for most of the back nine, with momentum seemingly on Woods’ side, but not the lead. That didn’t come until the 16th hole, and then he needed one more clutch shot to return to a familiar place.
“It’s like Stevie was saying out there,” Woods said of caddie Steve Williams. “This feels like we hadn’t left. You just remember how to do it. It hasn’t been that long for me, but you just have that feel of what to do. And it’s a matter of getting it done.”
