Why Society Is To Blame For Game Violence

Two days ago a 17 year old German student gunned down 15 people before killing him self at his school. Not even two hours after the massacre the media had already begun its assault on videogames. For a long time now politicians and concerned parent groups alike have been trying to pin the increases in teen violence on videogames and music. Games like Grand Theft Auto, Counter Strike, Mortal Kombat etc have all been targets of these social sects. They argue that hours of interacting with violent games and music has the ability to influence certain individuals to commit acts of violence.
Now I’m not going to argue with their point of view. They could be right for all I know. I am not a psychologist and I have not done numerous studies on the effects of videogames. But for me the fundamental problem that their argument faces is the fact its proponents are ignoring the root cause of violence in gaming. Everyone always wants a simple answer to explain away the evil that the world produces and in this argument there is no simple answer. The heart of the issue really is why society is so violent and what can we do to change it?
From the dawn of man humans have been a violent beast. Wars have been a part of everyday life ever since civilization began. At our most primordial levels humans are blood thirsty animals. Survival mechanisms are built into human beings genes just like every other animal. However human beings are the only species on the planet to exploit and glorify the dark side of nature. You see its not just videogames that are violent it’s our media in general. Everyday we are bombarded with violent images and shows around the world. We humans love violence, to us its entertainment. TV and games today are no different than the Romans who watched the gladiators fight to the death, or the Mayans who flocked to watch a game similar to basketball where the losers were sacrificed to the gods. In every great civilization ancient or modern, violence is the primary form of entertainment.
Games tend to catch a bad rap because unlike movies and TV shows the person playing the game is the active participant in the violence. Let’s take a look at Grand Theft Auto, here is a game that has been treated so bad it makes me sick. The Grand Theft Auto Series has always revolved around the mob. So right away we all know this game is about violence. It’s rated Mature and not sold to minors unless a guardian is present, yet anti-gaming advocates still claim it is marketed at kids. Now let’s look at the TV Show the Sopranos. The Sopranos is an extremely violent and popular mob show. When the show was still being made it was on the cable channel HBO because no network in their right mind would touch it due to its vulgarity and violent imagery. However now days The Sopranos can be seen 2-3 times per day on multiple basic cable channels during the middle of the day. Sure the swearing has been bleeped out, but the violence remains. Where are all the parents’ rights groups and politicians in outrage over The Sopranos? TV for some reason always gets a pass, even movies. Look at The Godfather Trilogy, widely considered by many to be the best series of films ever made.
It’s sad when the media is allowed to make videogame violence more of an issue than the genocides that are being committed all across Africa, or when we have thousands of troops fighting wars over seas. But what does that say about us as a population when we let our media deflect our attention away from the issues that really matter in this world? Where is the outrage! Violence in videogames is not the problem. Videogames merely reflect the world that is around us all. Just like movies, music, books, TV, and paintings. They are all an extension of humanity as a whole, so if all these watchdog parent groups really want to make the world a better place why don’t they start with themselves and they’re ignorance in regards to ignoring the real issues that we all face.

There is a much more simple way of saying this: a toxic society sees and creates toxicity.
