Xbox360 Answers Killzone 2 Challenge With The CryEngine 3

A major blow is about to be dealt to Sony’s PS3. In the wake of Killzone 2 the press and gaming fans alike have touted the PS3’s superior graphics, with Killzone 2 being the main evidence for the their argument. Crytek, the makers Crysis. The only game to rival Killzone 2 in terms of graphical prowess, have a presentation coming up this month at The Game Developers Conference (GDC) that is about to turn the console war on its head.
Having recently announced a new rendition of CryENGINE 2 dubbed appropriately CryENGINE 3 for the specific use of developing multi-platform games, Crytek is all set to debut the engine at this month’s GDC. If Crysis was any indication of what’s about to come to consoles then the PS3’s supposed “superior graphics” image could be shattered.
Killzone 2 was and still is for the moment the PS3’s claim to fame. Sony brags of the game being so advanced that the 360 couldn’t possibly handle it. However the PC for years has been the platform of choice for the graphics whores of the world. Crysis is widely considered by many to be the best looking game of all time. So now comes word that Crytek has developed the CryENGINE 3 designed just for consoles and Crytek believe that they can pull of Crysis level visuals for not only the PS3 but the Xbox 360 as well. With this news one could assume that Crysis level graphics appearing on the 360 would be a huge blow to Sony.
The blow to Sony would be deeper than cosmetics though. The PS3 as everyone knows has a built in Blu-Ray Drive which serves not only as a Hi-Def movie format, but also as a supposed necessity for game developers that want to make games with Killzone 2 level graphical quality. When the PS3 debuted, Sony used Blu-Ray as one of its main selling points to consumers and developers. Consumers were sold on the benefits of 1080p before 1080p TV sets were even on store shelves and game developers were sold on its superior memory to standard DVD and HD-DVD discs. So here we are today the format war is over and Blu-Ray has won. Games like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Killzone 2 are out and Sony credits Blu-Ray memory capacity as one of the main reasons that games like those are only able to be done on PS3, but if Crytek can pull of Crysis level graphics on the Xbox 360’s standard DVD format a new argument could soon erupt as to weather or not Blu-Ray is really all its cracked up to be for game developers. 
Now let’s try and put all this in perspective. The Xbox 360 benefited greatly from developers using the Unreal Engine, games like Gears of War and Bioshock still look amazing even when stacked up against Killzone 2. Now along comes Crytek director of business development Carl Jones boasting that the “CryENGINE 3 will set the benchmark for complete game engine solutions in performance, and services to game engine licensees and their players” With this announcement everyone must look at the fact that if the 360 can run a game with graphics comparable to Crysis it could essentially be game over for the PS3’s image. If the CryENGINE 3 is as good as Crytek says it is, ultra realistic graphics will not only be possible on the 360 but would become the norm as the engine becomes licensed out to other game developers. This would be a huge blow in to Sony as it essentially would shatter the PS3’s main selling point. The 360 was released a year earlier than PS3, has a greater install base and more must have exclusives than the PS3. Couple those reasons with the Xbox brand just flat out being more popular than the PlayStation brand at the moment and you have all the ingredients for a major shake up of the console war. Consumers may start to reassess their reasons for wanting a PS3 over the 360 and I would bet money that the cheaper price of a 360 would start to come into play even more than it is now.
Okay before all the Sony Fan boys hyperventilate and pass out over this news, let’s remind everyone that the CryEngine 3 has not debuted yet. You never know, Crytek’s presentation at the GDC may underwhelm. All developers talk up their products before they show them. It’s marketing, but if they do pull it off then watch out Sony.
