E3 2009
E3 is less than 2 months away and gamers worldwide are on the edge of their seats, anticipating what Sony, Nintendo and especially Microsoft have in store for gamers this year.
E3 2008 was Microsoft’s show, will E3 2009 be the same?
Microsoft definitely stole the thunder from Sony’s camp last year at E3, when they announced FF XIII was coming to the Xbox 360 console. The magnitude of that announcement had gamers worldwide in complete shock, and Sony fans filled with a deep hatred towards Microsoft for stealing another major exclusive.
GDC 2008 vs. GDC 2009
Most Xbox owners were disappointed with Microsoft at this year’s GDC, when they didn’t announce any of their upcoming titles for the year. 360 fans were expecting another mega announcement like last year at the GDC, when Epic announced Gears of War 2, unfortunately it didn’t happen. While understanding some of the fan’s frustrations, it boils down to two possibilities:
1. Microsoft didn’t have any titles worth mentioning.
2. They’re waiting for E3 to announce all of their major titles.
Can Microsoft’s exclusives compete with Sony’s?
So far, Sony has the most impressive line-up out of three next generation consoles that are on the market. Supposedly, the Xbox 360 has an arsenal of unannounced titles, but some don’t even seem that appealing.
To support my statements, I did some research, to see what exclusives may hit both systems this year.
We’ll start with the PS3 exclusives:
1. White Knight Chronicles:

JRPGS have been scarce ever since the PS3 launch back in 2007. PS3 fans around the world have been patiently waiting for a good RPG and WKC from Level 5 might fill that void. While the story is your average, ‘hero saves girl and then saves the world’, the gameplay is going to be where WKC shines. The battle system is real-time combat. The player has a “Battle Preparation” menu, which from there, the user will have a set of seven commands for each character in the party. These commands are called Function Palette, but that’s not even the best part of the combat system. The main character can transform into a giant White Knight, when you face bigger and tougher enemies. White Knight Chronicles is a role-playing game developed by Level-5 and published by Sony computer entertainment for the PlayStation 3, expect to hear some more information at E3.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves:

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is the sequel to the blockbuster hit Uncharted: Drake Fortune. Uncharted: Drake Fortune was one of the first ganes that showed the graphical power of PS3 and according to the developers, UC 2 is going to surpass its predecessor. UC 2 will feature new game play mechanics such as, stealth action, a climbing mechanic that will allow free movement, similar to one found in Assassin Creed. If that’s not enough, players will be introduce to Drake’s darker side. Players will be able to find out what lead Drake to become a thief in the first place. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is being developed by Naughty Dog and publish Sony Computer Entertainment.
Quantum Theory:

Imagine how Gears of War will perform on a Blu-ray disc. Imagine having 50 locust coming at you guns blazing and all, while having 10 Brumarks for back-up. Unfortunately that will probably never happen, but Quantum Theory might give GOW a run for its money. So far the only information about the game are two characters, a male named Syd and female named Fillena who must fight through a living tower. The game will feature a cover system similar to one found in Gears of War and huge bad-ass looking demons you might find in Devil May Cry. This game has a lot of potential and definitely something to look forward to at E3. Quantum Theory is being developed and published by Tecmo, the same guys that brought you the Ninja Gaiden Series.
WarDevil: Unleashed the Beast:

WarDevil: Unleash the Beast Within is a fantasy action-adventure game that is currently in production by CGI and it’s being develop by Digi-Guys, exclusively for the Playstation 3. It was originally suppose to come the PS3 and Xbox 360, but Xbox 360 version was canceled, the company stated that they wanted to focus on one system. WarDevil: UTBW reminds me of Too Human, it has a lot potential and I look forward to seeing this game at E3. Hopefully the guys at Digi-Guys can get right instead of the boneheads at Silicon Knights. Thirteen years to make a trash ga…..never mind.
God of War 3:

Finally the best for last, God of War 3. God of War 3 is being developed by Santa Monica and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. All can say, it’s freaking God of War 3.
Now the Xbox exclusives:
Halo: OSDT:

In Halo: OSDT you will take control of a soldier who is part of the “United Nation Space Command Orbital Drop Shock Trooper” (geez). The user will play the events leading up to Halo 3. However, the soldier will be extremely vulnerable to gunfire, seeing that he does not have the advanced armor, healing ability, strength and reflexes as the Masterchief. This seems very interesting, the character will have to move more cautiously and that means stealth gameplay might be avoid. Halo: OSDT is being developed by and publish by Microsoft.
Fallout 3: Broken Steel:

Fallout 3: Broken Steel is the third DLC content. In this DLC pack, the player will join the ranks of the “Brotherhood of Steel” and rid the Capital Wasteland of the “Enclave” remnants. Fallout 3: Broken Steel will release on May 5th, 2009.
Grand Theft Auto 4: Episode 2:

Not much is known about the second episode of the GTA series, but I’m sure it will be a great addition because it’s coming from Rockstar.
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction will take place two years after the events of Splinter Cell: Double Agent. Mr Fisher comes out of hiding because of an unspecified danger. This will be the fifth installment Splinter Cell series. This game has been in limbo for a while now, hopefully they will shine some light on this title at E3. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft.
Lost PLanet 2:
Lost Planet 2 will be running on the MT-Framework 2.0, an updated version of the engine used in several Capcom-developed games. Only an Xbox 360 version is currently at works but other platforms are being considered. Lost Planet 2 is an upcoming third person shooter and sequel to Lost Planet: Extreme Conditions both developed and published by Capcom.
While at the moment, one system may have better exclusives than the other. The information that I’ve just provided hasn’t even scratch tip of the iceberg yet. One must keep in mind both systems have handful of unannounced titles to be unveiled at this year’s E3.
E3 maybe Sony’s time to shine
Sony’s PS3 is gaining some serious momentum. Regardless of the negative articles and the NPD sales figure, there’s no denying that Sony is giving gamers what we want….games! Xbox on the other hand is keeping gamers on track on how many units they sale, which is good and all, but we tend not to pay attention to trivial things like that, we’re more interested in what games they will have on the market this year. Sony has already gave consumers a preview of what games are going to grace the PS3 system this year and there’s more to come at E3. Xbox hasn’t even announced anything good yet and it’s almost the middle of the year. So I doubt if any of their good titles would hit store shelves this year.
Final comments
E3 09 seems to be the biggest yet. Sony and Microsoft are coming out with their guns blazing, the question is, who will come out on top.
