Sony’s Eye Toy Gave Birth To The Nintendo Wii

First Eye Toy was devised by Dr. Richard Marks who had an idea of connecting a web cam to a ps2 to play games. The idea was then taken by Sce London studio that showed an early concept in 2002 at E3. Soon after the PS Eye was launched officially in the U.S on Oct. 23, 2007, followed by the launch in Japan and Australia in Oct. 25, 2007.

The idea of the Eye Toy to many gamers including myself seemed revolutionary at the time. The thought of being able to control video games using your physical body movement was amazing and unheard of. The industry was buzzing for a while with the endless possibilities this new toy provided. As time went on Sony showed no interest or support for their new member to the PS family. That marked the death of the PS Eye :(

Nintendo being the visionaries for original ideas and revolutionary concepts ran with the idea and capitalized. Introducing the Wii “The Revolution” at E3 2005 created by Shigeru Miyamoto. The Wii arrived in the scene with a very similar concept detection of 3d hand movement.

Sony watching from the side lines the success of Wii worldwide. Is ready to support the Eye Toy once again with the introduction of Eye Pet introduced at Leipzig 2008.Created by Sce London the originators of the Eye Toy. Looking to take back the casual market once again. But is it a little too late? Only time will tell when Eye Pet is released sometime in 2009

    I think the Wii is great, but since they ran with the motion sensing tech, it will be hard on third parties, because they want to save on resources and time by just porting for a console with a similar architecture. Third parties hate developing a ported game from the ground up. What I would like is Nintendo to restructure it’s overall marketing audience. Fine to go after casual gamers, but it’s the core that keeps you afloat. Cock-blocking the release of Fatal Frame 4 in the US just proves they need an overhaul with core gamers. Since Nintendo did there own thing with Wii, they will have to suffer the consequences of not getting high profile titles: RE5 (no run and gun?), street fighter 4, and basically anything screaming “kick ass”. Madworld is great, House of the Dead is Great, why can’t Nintendo keep this streak coming. No we get Reggie and his marketing team, Cock-Blocking, Fatal Frame. Your telling me a guy that used to be an executive for Pizza Hut is in charge of Nintendo publishing games in regions? Come on. To earn hardcore cred, Nintendo needs to do something radical come E3. Since they garnered an image of being family friendly, they should release an AO rated game (Manhunt 3, with no censorship as an example) to the hardcore fans. Do something opposite, and push for more online play in there games. You made WiiSpeak, but nobody is using one. The Conduit should remedy the multiplayer problem. The Wii is an innovative piece of equipment, just he mindset marketing of going after casual 24/7 will hurt them. Shame!

    Well Im not so sure the eye toy alone was the product that inspired nintendo to go down motion sensing gaming. Yes it may have actually given the idea that motion sensing gaming could work well if refined but in the NES days the power-glove used sensor bars and the players movement to perform certain actions, it was a capital F fail but im guessing the eye toy gave nintendo the confidence to delve into it again. And has it paid off big time.

    I think the Wii is a fad. I haven’t touched my Wii since Smash Brothers came out. I am looking forward to Eye Pet looks pretty cool. Oh yeah, I know “touched my Wii” sounds funny.

    this is one of the dumbest conclusions ive ever heard. it doesnt make any sense. if this were the case we could just say that the eye toy ripped off the idea of motion sensing tech from the countless products before that had shitty motion sensing tech. they tried motion sensing technology on the genesis. theyve done it on gameboy. all that came before the eye toy. and the eye toy is just another example of shitty motion sensing tech. ive played the eye toy and it was garbage. its so inaccurate. comparing that technology to the advanced precise technology found in a wii remote (especially with the new motion plus add on) is just ignorant.
