Eminem Planning Violent Game For iPhone

Rapper Eminem has revealed a gaming application that could find its way into the iTunes application store.

The rapper announced the game on his Twitter page and posted a link to the game, which is also titled Relapse.

Eminem has had a tense relationship with iTunes.

The two have battled in court twice, the first time over a commercial that featured Eminem’s track “Lose Yourself,” the second over downloading royalties.

In 2005, Eminem’s Eight Mile Style publishing company agreed to an undisclosed financial settlement over an iPod commercial that featured “Lose Yourself,” without permission.

In March of 2009, FBT Productions, a company affiliated with Eminem, sued Universal Records in an attempt to get higher royalty rates on all digital sales through Apple’s iTunes App Store.

FBT argued that their tracks were “masters,” which were then reproduced as digital copies.

While Eminem was not a party to that lawsuit, FBT, he would have made millions, had FBT one the case, which went in favor of Universal, after a judge ruled that a sold online is no different than a song bought in a store.

It appears that the various legal skirmishes have not impacted Eminem’s relationship with Apple thus far, although the rapper’s proposed game may not help the relationship.

The screen capture of The Relapse game features a tattooed figure angrily approaching a skeleton or masked-liked figure, with a studded 2×4.

The game may not meet Apple’s standards for decency, as similar apps like “Slasher” and “Murderdrome” have been rejected in the past.

More recently, an updated iPhone app from Nine Inch Nails was rejected, reportedly due to the lyrical content of their album The Downward Spiral.

Trent Reznor, who is currently protesting the decision, pointed out that iTunes carries the album in the store, yet has blocked the album’s application to iPhones.

Tomorrow (May 5), Eminem’s track “Old Time’s Sake” featuring Dr. Dre will go on sale in Apple’s iTunes store.

No official word is available about Eminem’s Relapse application. Eminem’s album The Relapse hits stores May 19.

Need for Speed: Shift meets Gran Turismo

EA decided to scrape everything that made the NFS series famous. The millions of fans of the NFS series will have to say goodbye, to the underground illegal street racing and cop chases. NFS: Shift will be a racing sim, that will have as much depth as the infamous Gran Turismo.

According to PSM3 The cars themselves are “beautiful”, with both the interiors and exteriors “lovingly detailed”, but that is not where the game shines, it will be the handling. EA plans to place real emphasis on the driving experience this time around. The camera effects are going to be to simulate G-force and give the player a sense of speed.

When the player crashes, their vision will blur and shake until they get back on track. All of these elements sounds cool, however we got to wait until the fall to see how the final product performs for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Apple EA Takeover Dismissed by Analyst

What we heard: Though an Apple offensive into the gaming market has long been rumored, speculation of such a move re-emerged with a vengeance recently. Last week, as reported by Forbes magazine, the Cupertino, California-based hardware giant hired away Richard Teversham, the senior director of business, insights, and strategy of Microsoft’s European Xbox arm. The week prior, Apple hired AMD and ATI veteran Bob Drebin, designer of the graphics processor used in the GameCube, and Raja Koduri, AMD’s ex-Chief Technical officer.

The HR trifecta was taken by many as a sign that Apple would ramp up gaming support for the surging iPhone market and its Mac computer line. However, this week saw cable network CNBC stir up speculation that Apple might more directly enter the game industry–by simply buying Electronic Arts. In a summary posted by TheStreet.com, CNBC analyst Guy Adami is quoted as saying that “there is chatter that Apple is eying Electronic Arts as a takeover target.”

The official story: With EA’s earnings report just hours away, reps for the company did not return requests for comment.

Bogus or not bogus?: Rumors of an EA buyout have rattled around since the company’s stock became a bargain during last year’s worldwide economic implosion. Back then, it was the Walt Disney Company–which Apple CEO Steve Jobs has a large stake in–that was pegged as the suitor.

But while EA is a major backer of gaming on the iPod, iPhone, and Mac, talk of a takeover seems a bit premature. Also, CNBC’s game industry “insight” should be taken with a fist-size grain of salt, as the oft-ridiculed cable network recently claimed the Grand Theft Auto franchise is “running out of steam”–while acknowledging GTAIV’s 13 million units of sales in the same article.

Indeed, one of the game-industry’s top analysts was quick with the “bogus” smackdown. “Sounds retarded to me,” Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter told GamaSutra. “[iTunes] owner Apple could buy Warner Music for around $3 billion, and control 20 percent of all recorded music. That makes more sense to their current business model than buying EA for more than twice that, doesn’t it? I don’t want to start a rumor, but want to point out that Apple doesn’t own any entertainment content, so I don’t know why they would feel compelled to enter a new business unrelated to their current product slate.”

To get a taste of what gaming will be like on Apple’s Mac platform, check out this tech demo from id Software’s John Carmack at the 2007 Apple Worldwide Developer’s Conference. The game would later be revealed to be Rage, which will be published by EA.

EA Posts 1 Billion-Dollar Loss

Posted by bakerboy | Microsoft, Nintendo, Real Talk with the HipHopGamer, Sony | Tuesday 5 May 2009 5:28 pm

It’s been a rough year for the industry, but few companies have taken it on the chin like Electronic Arts. Today the publisher released its financial results for the fourth-quarter and fiscal year ended March 31, showing that the company limped to the finish line in a year that saw it lose over a billion dollars.

EA’s financial results were almost as grisly as a good round of Left 4 Dead.

Net losses for the 12 months were just under $1.01 billion, more than twice the previous year’s $454 million in red ink. However, the publisher’s sales were up for the year, with revenues jumping 15 percent year-over-year to $4.21 billion.

For the fourth quarter on its own, EA posted sales of $860 million, down nearly 24 percent from the previous fourth quarter’s $1.13 billion haul. Those sales were led by Skate 2, Rock Band 2, The Lord of the Rings: Conquest, Left 4 Dead, and Need for Speed: Undercover. The good news for the publisher was that it only has a net loss $42 million during the three-month stretch, compared with $94 million over the same period last year.

In a statement accompanying the release of the numbers, EA CEO John Riccitiello focused on the company’s future instead of its rough recent past.

“EA’s strong cost actions in Q4 FY09 together with our investments in our digital service businesses will set us up for a stronger FY10,” Riccitiello said. “EA is well positioned with the right strategies in a growing industry.”

Unfortunately, those strategies might take a while to turn things around. EA updated its fiscal 2010 guidance, saying it expects revenues for the full-year to be down to between $3.7 billion and $3.85 billion. It also expects to lose money in fiscal 2010, although not quite as much as in fiscal 2009. For the full year, EA is expecting losses between $274 million and $469 million.

Electronic Arts is holding its quarterly conference call with investors this afternoon. This story will be updated with details as appropriate.

[UPDATE] Highlights from the conference call are listed below:

–Pandemic’s recent release The Lord of the Rings: Conquest has sold more than 1 million copies.

–The most recent info on Warhammer Online puts the game’s dedicated player base at 300,000.

–Electronic Arts is currently working on a lineup of 30 games for Apple’s iPhone.

–EA Sports Active is confirmed for release this month.

–Riccitiello says he’s confident that 10 EA Wii titles release during the current fiscal year will be hits.

–The Sims 3 should be a major reason why EA Play division sales are expected to be up $300 million in the coming year. There will be DLC for the game on day one, as well as Apple Macintosh and iPhone versions.

–EA Sports revenues are expected to be flat for the year, while EA Games should be up on the strength of Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age, Army of Two: The 40th Day, and more.

–In a Q&A session during the call, EA executives acknowledged “softness” in the rhythm game category that has caused them to lower their expectations for that part of their business.

–Riccitiello said that he doesn’t think softness in the Wii market in Japan necessarily presages similar softness in North America. However, he does think Asian trends like subscription-based games are gaining considerable traction in the West.

–When asked about research and development spending for the next generation of consoles, Riccitiello says that he hasn’t seen indications that a next generation needs to come anytime soon. He adds that the current generation could definitely be an extended console generation because there isn’t as much need for advancement now that gaming his entered the HD era.

–Riccitiello says one of the company’s problem titles that suffered as a result of the economic downturn last year was Need for Speed. EA is confident that this year’s Need for Speed, Madden, and FIFA titles “feel very strong,” He also points to EA Sports Active and Brutal Legend as potential breakout titles.

Will Square Enix Reveal a Western Release Date for FFXIII at E3?

Posted by MattG | Microsoft, Real Talk with the HipHopGamer, Sony | Tuesday 5 May 2009 1:18 pm

It’s 2009, and Square Enix is still one of the few major developers that take anywhere from 3-6 months to localize some of their games. While companies like Konami and Capcom have games released within a week of each other worldwide, many expect Final Fantasy XIII to hit Western shelves either 6-12 months after the Japanese release.

With Square Enix already revealing that Final Fantasy XIII will be released in Japan this Holiday Season, will they now announce the Western release date at the biggest American video game conference, e3? It seems highly possible since head honchos at Square Enix have already revealed that they have started the voice work and subtitles for the english version. Square Enix also wants to appeal more to Western audiences so instead of making a small announcement blurb, it seems likely that they would like to make some type of bang at e3 and this could do it.

The real question is how long will it be before they release the Western version? With subtitles and voicework already in the works it should cut down time by a lot, but have they started development on the Xbox 360 version yet? They say they want to cut down the loaclization time to less than what they have done in the past, so that must mean the 360 version is in the works, right? Hopefully, but here is to another big reveal at e3, an actual release date….

50 Cent Hoping For Sequel To ‘Blood On The Sand’ Video Game

MTV Writes:

50 Cent wants to do a sequel. The Southside Queens MC says the gaming community so eagerly embraced his “Blood in the Sand” that now he wants to make part two.

“I’m hoping we’ll be able to do it,” Fif said with a grin Thursday at the Manhattan Play N Trade store, where he celebrated the game with his fans. “With the success of this actual project, we’ll try to do it again.

“[Fans] said it’s a good video game,” the G-Unit business maven added. “They enjoyed it. I had the opportunity to play with some people online. That was exciting and another way to reach people that are aware of me.”

When it came to his gaming skills, 50 downplayed his abilities. He didn’t want to talk himself up too big and get squashed by more adept competition. “I’m pretty good,” he laughed. “I like to think I’m the best [but] I like to say ‘pretty good’ just in case somebody comes in here that really knows how to do it.”

That “somebody” won’t be anyone from his own camp. He said the rest of the Unit doesn’t want to battle in video game combat. “Tony and Banks and Whoo Kid would rather play themselves than to play me.”

Fif’s future games, aside from “Blood in the Sand 2,” probably won’t involve his likeness. “I’d like to be a part of designing and marketing a video game I’m not actually in,” he explained. “I talked to THQ.”

50 is currently in New York shooting the film “12.” He plays a tough guy called Lionel. As far the movie adaptation of the popular game “Saint’s Row” that he’s trying to spearhead, Fifty said he’s still in the early stages. “I was trying to option the rights,” he said. “The more we talk about it, the more expensive it will get.”

Nicolas Cage car stunt goes wrong in Times Square (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) – A stunt man filming a car chase in Times Square for a new Nicolas Cage movie crashed his Ferrari into a store front and two pedestrians suffered minor injuries, police and the film’s producers said on Monday.

The crash, which happened early on Monday, was captured on amateur video that was posted on the New York Post website, www.nypost.com .

It showed two cars weaving in between other traffic before the front one skidded out of control, mounting the sidewalk and crashing into the window of an outlet of an Italian chain restaurant.

Normal traffic in Times Square had been shut down for the filming of “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” and all the cars in the video were part of the movie shoot.

Police said a 23-year-old man was hit by a falling pole and complained of a head injury, and a 21-year-old woman suffered a foot injury. Both injuries were considered minor and the stunt man driving the car was uninjured.

“On site production medics responded immediately and two pedestrians were taken to the hospital for evaluation,” said a statement from the production of “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” which is a Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films production.

“One person has been released and while we were told the second person was also released we have not been able to confirm that,” said the statement. “All safety regulations were followed and second unit filming will continue as planned.”

Due for release in mid-2010, “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” is the story of a college student reluctantly recruited to work for a sorcerer, played by Cage. Set in contemporary New York, it is based on the segment of the same name from the Disney animated film “Fantasia.”
