Can Infamous Prove That GTA Was Held Back In Open World Gameplay?

Posted by hiphopgamer | Real Talk with the HipHopGamer, Sony | Thursday 7 May 2009 10:04 pm

Intro:

Early last year Grand Theft Auto IV was released and although it was a great game many fans were left disappointed.  Considering we’re in the next generation era,  gamers everywhere expected more from the title and instead they felt ripped off.  GTA: San Andreas had so much content inside it for a last generation game that consumers were left starving for more, and when they didn’t recieve it with GTA: IV the decision of Rockstar going multi-platform was questioned.

Point #1

All the hype surrounding Playstation 3 and the blu-ray space,  along side the hard drive in every system one would guess that if the game was made exclusivley on Playstation 3 GTA:IV would’ve had a better turn out.  According to Rockstar Games there’s some truth to that statement in the form of (LOOK BELOW)

Rockstar’s creative vice president Dan Houser was asked: “On PS3 you’ve got a guarantee that every machine is going to have a hard-drive and, with Blu-ray, you’ve got plenty of storage, whereas on Xbox 360 there’s no guarantee of a hard-drive and you’re working with the DVD format. Does that create limitations?” To which he replied, “Yep.”

Rockstar co-founder Sam Houser doesn’t know if the next Grand Theft Auto title after IV will properly fit onto the 360’s standard-sized discs.

So based on these factual statements that leads me to my next point which is Infamous.

Point #2

Since day one Sony has shown that the real power of the Playstation 3 rests in it’s exclusives.  Resistance, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Ratchet, Killzone 2 and more has stunned the industry and provided a gap between the two rival platforms.  Now entering into 2009 Sony continues to show and prove and Infamous looks to be the first open world exclusive title that everyone wants to see live up to the hype, and most of all will this game provide a glimpse of what GTA: IV should’ve been if it was made exclusively on Playstation 3.

So far from what the industry has seen the game looks amazing and with thousands of people roaming around, with a solid frame – rate, great story, and deep interaction with the enviornment, this might be a sign of what a open world game should and could play like exclusivley on Playstation 3.  GTA: IV although it shares a completely different concept as far as game design you can’t escape the fact that in infamous you can literally climb up on any building , destroy any and everything on screen, get into large battles,  and all this is shown in much more detail graphically than what GTA: IV offered.  Sony needs a big answer at this years E3′09 and if rumors are true and they secure the next GTA exclusivley then that will be a even bigger blow to Microsoft than last year’s announcement of Final Fantasy 13 going multi-platform.

Closing

Infamous will be released very soon so the wait is almost over. Will this project turn heads and prove Sony loyalist that the next GTA should be exclusive? or has Microsoft got another ace up there sleeve to make sure GTA: V runs great on XBOX360 without any limitations.

THQ boss doesn’t expect Sony slice at E3

Play.tm writes:

“Speaking as THQ’s latest financial results were confirmed, CEO Brian Farrell described the PlayStation 3 as a “challenging” system – and that he doesn’t expect a price cut at this year’s E3.

“We’re not expecting a price cut at E3, but we do expect one later in the year. That’s just our guess… not based on any knowledge from Sony.”

The PS3 has been the subject of endless pricing conjecture, but with Sony still making a loss on hardware sales it is unlikely a cut will be introduced as soon as some would hope – despite the console being far pricier than rival systems from Nintendo and Microsoft.

More from THQ and Farrell soon.”

My Thoughts: If in fact there is no price cut at E3, i wouldn’t think it would hurt Sony’s numbers from rising. Also, no one said there wasn’t going to be a price cut either.

PS3 sales spike 288% in Japan, no US FFXIII demo on Blu-ray

Gamespot.com Writes:

“Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that the PS3 will be getting a similar boost stateside. Following months of official silence from Square Enix USA and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, which is distributing Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete in North America, confirmation has apparently come that the US version will not have the FFXIII demo.

“The type of demo version we released in Japan, we currently have no plan of doing that abroad,” producer Yoshinori Kitase told Videogamer.com. The reason for the omission was “partly because we are going to carry on with the project alongside the Xbox [360] version, so we really can’t just make it available only for the PS3.” Square Enix is now considering releasing it at as download on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, said Kitase.

Though neither Sony Pictures nor Square Enix would officially confirm nor deny them, Kistane’s comments indicate that the “Exclusive Sneak Peek at FINAL FANTASY XIII” listed on the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete table of contents is only a trailer. Though Sony reps say the company has still not officially announced a release date for the Blue-ray disc, retailers such as Amazon are listing it as going on sale June 2. It is already available on DVD and UMD domestically.”

My thoughts: 288% is amazing in Sony’s part. it seems the numbers are just increasing. Plus, a major dissapointment that the demo will not be included in the Blu-Ray.

EA, NCAA Sued Over Sports-Sim Likenesses

Posted by bakerboy | Microsoft, Real Talk with the HipHopGamer, Sony | Thursday 7 May 2009 3:15 pm

In November, a group of retired NFL players won a $28.1 million judgment against the National Football League Players Association related to the use of the former pros’ names and likenesses in EA’s annual Madden football simulation. The group’s spokesperson went on to promise further litigation targeted at EA, and if and when that legal complaint materializes, it will join a suit lobbing similar complaints against NCAA Football.

That isn’t Kristofer O’Dowd throwing a block for Mark Sanchez, if anyone’s asking.

Earlier this week, former Arizona State and University of Nebraska quarterback Sam Keller filed a class action suit against Electronic Arts, the National Collegiate Athletics Association, and the Collegiate Licensing Company. In his suit, which extends to all relevant student-athletes, Keller claims EA, the NCAA, and the CLC are in cahoots to violate bylaws prohibiting the use of collegiate athletes’ names and likenesses in the publisher’s NCAA Football and NCAA Basketball sports sims.

“Despite clear prohibitions on the use of student names and likenesses in NCAA bylaws, contracts, and licensing agreements, Electronic Arts utilizes the likenesses of individual student-athletes in its NCAA basketball and football videogames to increase sales and profits,” reads the suit. “Electronic Arts also intentionally circumvents the prohibitions on utilizing student athletes’ names in commercial ventures by allowing gamers to upload entire rosters, which include players’ names and other information, directly into the game in a matter of seconds.”

Keller’s complaint notes that NCAA bylaw 12.5 “specifically prohibits the commercial licensing of an NCAA athlete’s ‘name, picture, or likeness,” and that all Division 1 NCAA student athletes must sign a contract acknowledging the rule in order to be eligible to compete.

However, the suit claims that the NCAA is not honoring these rules, as it continues to sign off on games produced by EA that strive to be as realistic as possible. “With rare exception, virtually every real-life Division I football or basketball player in the NCAA has a corresponding player in Electronic Arts’ games with the same jersey number, and virtually identical height, weight, build, and home state. In addition, Electronic Arts matches the player’s skin tone, hair color, and often even a player’s hair style.”

In particular, Keller’s suit called out Kent State running back Eugene Jarvis. “Eugene Jarvis, for example, stands a mere 5′5″ and weighs only 170 pounds. He is also an African-American red-shirt junior from Pennsylvania who wears number 6 for the Golden Flashes. And although he is extremely talented, Mr. Jarvis is unusually small for a college football player. For these reason, one would expect a randomly generated virtual running back for the Golden Flashes to be somewhat dissimilar to Mr. Jarvis.”

The suit goes on to note that Number 6 for the Golden Flashes in NCAA Football 2009 perfectly matches Jarvis’ real-life information. Keller’s complaint goes on to note several other such occurrences in the game, and the many ways in which those who play EA’s game can input specific character traits of real-world players into the NCAA titles.

Keller is seeking to block the future use of players’ names and likenesses. The suit also seeks monetary damages, the disgorgement of all earnings related to the previous games, as well as the destruction of all infringing games in EA or third parties’ possession.

Gears of War 2 hits 5 Million, New Add-on Due July 28

Posted by bakerboy | Real Talk with the HipHopGamer | Thursday 7 May 2009 1:44 am

gears2box

It’s no secret that Epic Games’ Gears of War 2 is a major hit, but Microsoft took the opportunity to remind the world of it again this morning. The company announced that, since the game’s release last November, the Xbox 360-exclusive shooter has sold more than 5 million units worldwide, bringing franchise unit sales–including Gears of War for the PC and 360–to more than 11 million units to date.

The Cole Train is moving to the next stop…

Ostensibly to commemorate the milestone, Microsoft has also announced a new expansion for Gears of War 2, the All Fronts Collection. Available only at retail on July 28 in North America and Europe for $19.99, £14.99, or €19.99, the collection will feature all three multiplayer map packs–Flashback, Snowblind, and Combustible–as well as the new Gears of War 2: Dark Corners add-on. The collection will also include an introduction from Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinksi, an Xbox Live theme, a collectible poster, and a strategy guide.

Gears of War 2: Dark Corners will sport seven new multiplayer maps–Allfathers Garden, Memorial, Sanctuary, War Machine, Highway, Way Station, and Nowhere–described in detail below. In addition, it will have a single-player chapter eliminated from the release version of Gears of War 2. Called Road to Ruin, it will see game heroes Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago return to the locust hollow “in a scene that can be played two ways, guns blazing or in all-new stealth mode.” Dark Corners will be available a la carte directly from Xbox Live for MSP 1,600 ($19.99) for those who already own the map packs and don’t want to deal with a trip to the store.

The Locust are still rather temperamental.

GameSpot will have more details on Gears of War 2: Dark Corners as they become available. Microsoft described its seven new map packs thusly:

–Allfathers Garden: Honor the sacred grounds of the Coalition founders in this explosive map, where powerful weapons catalyze fast and furious action at this COG landmark.

–Memorial: Set near the Eternal Flame, which pays tribute to the fallen soldiers on the battlefield, a hard-fought battle ensues at the Tomb of Unknowns. Putting their flank formation and evasive skills to the test, players will fight to control the Boomshot.

–Sanctuary: Once a peaceful ground for reflection and remembrance, all that remains of the Sanctuary is the chill of death. Feast your eyes on the arsenal of weapons available as you make your way through the tight paths and blind corners of the Locust-damaged temple corridors.

–War Machine: In the abandoned train station that once served as a hub for travel, players will need to master the Longshot, Mulcher, and Boomshot weapons to advance the fight while evading fire from the platforms above.

–Highway: Take the fight deep into the Locust Hollow in the complex passages of this underground highway system brimming with enemy vermin. Stick together, separate the enemy, and have an exit strategy ready or it’ll be a one-way trip.

Oh my God! They killed Carmine! You bastards!

–Way Station: Sitting in limbo between death and “processing” are Locust way stations filled with fallen COG soldiers. Tread lightly and practice patience as it’s better to sacrifice firepower for stealth while navigating this minefield of hidden grenades.

–Nowhere: Set in the middle of what was once a destination for weary desert travelers, the land is now barren and devoid of life. Pick off your enemies with the Longshot sniper rifle and make your way to the stairwell with a well-fortified team during this intense firefight.

THQ Losses hit $431 Million, Saints Row 2 Sells 2.6 Million

Posted by bakerboy | Microsoft, Real Talk with the HipHopGamer, Sony | Thursday 7 May 2009 1:31 am

thq-logo-10

THQ’s 2009 fiscal year was, to put it politely, turbulent. Facing mounting losses on sinking revenues even before the global economy took a dive at the end of 2008, the publisher has enacted sweeping company-wide changes that include $220 million in cost-cutting measures at the cost of nearly a quarter of its global workforce.

Saints Row 2 slays 2.6 million.

Today, THQ’s financial status snapped into focus, as the publisher reported that revenues for its fiscal year ended March 31, 2009, had slipped 22 percent to $830 million. Losses for the period expanded dramatically, with THQ posting a net loss of $431.1 million during its 2009 fiscal year, compared to $35.3 million in the red a year ago.

Breaking out its performance during the January-March quarter, THQ said revenues slipped 9 percent to $170.3 million, with losses totaling $96.9 million. Top sellers for the publisher during the period were WWE Legends of Wrestlemania and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II. The publisher also said that Saints Row 2–developed by layoff-target Volition Inc.–has now sold 2.6 million units worldwide.

“In light of a challenging fiscal 2009, we have substantially completed a significant realignment of our business to position THQ for profitability and positive cash flow in fiscal 2010,” said THQ president and CEO Brian Farrell said in a statement. “We have taken decisive actions to achieve our cost saving objectives, eliminating $220 million in cash expenditures while at the same time implementing a focused product strategy. We are investing in the brands and products with the highest potential to drive THQ’s long-term profitable growth.”

THQ also announced today that it has secured a $35 million line of credit at Bank of America–itself an institution that needs to raise $33.9 billion in capital to satisfy government regulators, The New York Times reports. As noted by THQ CFO Paul Pucino, “In today’s economic environment, we are pursuing this credit facility as a prudent backup to our $141 million cash and short-term investment balance at March 31, 2009.”

Looking ahead to fiscal 2010, which runs April 1, 2009, through March 31, 2010, THQ expects to increase upon that cash balance by $50 million by year’s end. Top releases for the publisher include Darksiders, Red Faction Guerrilla, UFC 2009 Undisputed, and WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010. In addition to the previously revealed mass-market titles MX vs. ATV and All Star Cheer Squad 2, THQ expects to announce three more titles of the casual-oriented ilk for release during the current fiscal year.

THQ is holding its quarterly conference call with investors this afternoon. This story will be updated with details as appropriate.

[UPDATE] Highlights from the conference call are listed below:

–THQ CEO Brian Farrell said that the Warhammer 40,000 franchise has now shipped more than 4.5 million units, while the Saints Row franchise has sold nearly 5 million units. WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2009 also shipped more than 4.5 million units during the 2009 fiscal year.

–CFO Paul Pucino detailed a number of reasons THQ sales dipped during the fiscal year. Namely, the financial officer noted that WWE franchise sales slipped 24 percent, kid-friendly game sales fell 38 percent, and currency exchange rates were unfavorable.

–According to Farrell, THQ is not expecting Sony to cut the price of the PlayStation 3 at E3, though he does expect a price cut to occur later this year.

–Citing figures from Microsoft, Farrell said that UFC 2009 demo downloads are in the top 1 percent of all demos released through Xbox Live. Red Faction is in the top 7 percent, said Farrell.
