Can a Metal Gear Raiden Work?

Posted on 18. May, 2009 by MattG in Features, Real Talk with the HipHopGamer, Sony

With all the rumors surfacing about a new Metal Gear being revealed at E3, the obvious first question is, who would be the main protagonist in the game? The most logical character would be Raiden, and more specifically Ninja Raiden from MGS4. Raiden from MGS4 is probably one of the coolest characters in the history of video games, and his main moments of screen time in MGS4 cemented his legacy in both the series and gaming as a whole. While I have a lot of love for the character Raiden, can a Metal Gear game be made and stay close to it’s roots with him as the main character?

The game was built on both stealth action gameplay and gun/close quarter combat. Raiden, while a ninja, didn’t really take the whole stealth approach in Metal Gear Solid 4. Actually he reminded me more of a Hideki Kamiya, creator of Devil May Cry, protagonist. He was just flat out over the top action. While this was probably put into place in Metal Gear Solid 4 to make him look amazing, how much will the game have the Metal Gear stealth feel to it?

While Metal Gear Solid 4 moved towards more of a action feel to it, the move to a ninja main character would be an even bigger jump. Metal Gear Solid 2 experimented with sword gameplay, but would players really want a full fledged game where the main weapon is a sword. Would it make sense for Raiden to ever wield a gun for an extended period of time?

Kojima could make the game stealthy, but how would the battle combat work out? Would it be over the top action like gamers saw in MGS4, or would it be a more in-depth version of the MGS2 swordplay. Would a Metal Gear Raiden really be a Metal Gear? While it would no doubt be a good game because of the team behind it, but would it fit in with the rest of the series? Would it be better to rename the franchise and consider it a spinoff rather than a sequel, or will Kojima be able to bring that stealth action feel to a cyborg super ninja? Can’t wait to see.

nobody said raiden has to be a ninja. Again, the story can be set in a different time/era. It could be anything related to raiden. It can maybe be when Raiden first started and how he became a top “ninja” (Portable ops I think). Raiden from MGS4 won’t work, but it can be any other time, etc. Maybe some backstory of Raiden, etc.

It can work is what I am saying, unless they use MGS4 raiden. The gameplay will be way too different.

Of course a game centered around Raiden would work. The question you pose suggests that just because the character you control is a super ninja cyborg, that you would be over-powered and just be able to wade through everything “guns blazing” (albeit with a sword, although he does have the Foxhound training so guns, too). Let’s not forget, Raiden is a “ninja” who is stealthy by nature, but that doesn’t exactly solve the problem of him being overpowered.

So what would make a super cyborg ninja re-evaluate his approach to an objective, well for gameplay purposes overwhelming odds against him, a story element such as a hostage element to contend with (i.e. – where your main objective was to prevent loss of life of the hostage/s, where alerting the enemies to your presence puts that very goal in jeopardy). There are a number of ideas you could use, but that is up to the developers to ultimately decide.

But, back to the question posed by this article, yes a new Metal Gear game with Raiden as the protagonist could fit, and not break the continuity of the MGS universe, besides it has already partly worked already, as pointed out in the article with MGS2: SoL.
