Why Announcing Final Fantasy XIII For The Xbox 360 Is Only The Beginning

Posted by Master Samo | Microsoft, Nintendo, PC, Real Talk with the HipHopGamer | Thursday 14 May 2009 1:20 pm

Gamers need to realize that when Final Fantasy XIII was announced, last year, as a multiplatform title, the subliminal message that was sent by Microsoft due to that announcement was quite clear. Regardless of whether or not gamers would actually admit it, the undeniable fact remains that such an announcement is destined to create a paradigm shift in the way people view Microsoft forever.

If you pay close attention to the Square-Microsoft relationship and its progression, you would begin to notice a pattern materializing before your very eyes. The pattern is more like water testing. Let me explain, if you are at a lake, and you suddenly feel the need to swim, your first thought would not be to jump in; the first thing you would normally do is test the water temperature; if it’s too cold and you are still feeling the urge to jump in, then you would need to slowly and gradually immerse yourself, in order to avoid jolting your system with a sudden temperature shift, until you are completely immersed in water; only at that point will you be able to swim freely and enjoy the experience. That is exactly what Square Enix has done.

If you notice the gradual story progression of  the Square-developed titles for the Xbox 360, you would easily be able to predict where things are going. In April of 2006, they released Final Fantasy XI Online, a title that was released, over two years ago, on both the PS2 and PC, and was therefore, nothing more than a port of a title that Square has already profited from. In July of 2007, they released Project Sylpheed, a third-person space shooter from a genre that is not one of Square’s strong points.

In September of 2008, they released Infinite Undiscovery, a JRPG title developed by tri-Ace, one of Square’s most important second-party developers. In November of 2008, they released The Last Remnant, a JRPG title, developed by Square’s internal studio, that was initially announced as a multiplatform title, but was suddenly released as an Xbox 360 exclusive. Finally, after being fully immersed in the Xbox 360 waters, in February of 2009, they released Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope, a JRPG title, developed by tri-Ace, that was a sequel to one of Square’s biggest first-party franchises, exclusively on Microsoft’s console!

If we also add the fact that, at E3 08, Square-Enix announced Final Fantasy XIII as a multiplatform title, and the fact that Front Mission Evolved has been recently announced for the Xbox 360, it would be quite clear to us where things are going. Therefore, it is my belief that in 2009, one or more of the following predictions will surely be realized:

1. Final Fantasy XIII will finally be announced for the Xbox 360 in Japan.

2. Final Fantasy Versus XIII will finally be announced as a multiplatform title.

3. Kingdom Hearts 3 will be announced as an Xbox 360 exclusive!

To any gamer that developed an embolism from my last prediction, may you rest in peace.

God Bless You All

To all readers, I would like to thank you in advance for reading this article. I really hope you enjoyed it. As an added bonus, I have a few Bits Of Information (BOI) that I wanted to include in the article but wasn’t able to. Therefore, I will include them in this comment. This is just an added bonus for all the readers:

BOI 1) Square Soft: was a Japanese video game company founded in September of 1983 by Masafumi Miyamoto.

BOI 2) Squaresoft: was also a brand name used by Square between 1992 and 2003. In fact, the name was incorrectly used to refer to the entire organization, but the Japanese corporate name remained Square Co., Ltd. until the Enix merger took place.

BOI 3) Squaresoft: the company’s first title was The Death Trap, which was designed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, a part-time employee at the time, and released on the NEC PC-8801 in 1984.

I hope everyone enjoyed the Information provided
    God Bless You All

I only see Number 1 happening on your list of three things likely to happen.

No major news will come about Versus this year, and there is no way in hell Kingdom Hearts will be an exclsuive to the 360

    Samo-

You write some good articles. I enjoy them very much. You can actually write a well thought out argument with a few facts/tibits to back up your claim.

Now if KH3 is announced exclusive then that will be huge. I look forward to reading your articles.

Yea I only see number 1 happening, I want to say KH 3 will become a multi-platform title, I don’t know what makes you think it will become Xbox exclusive. We are not going hear any new info on FF versus XIII until next year at E3. We can’t forget that the exclusive JRPGS that are on the 360 right now, are less than great. Maybe choosing the 360 as the new home of JRPGS wasn’t a smart idea, but only Square-Enix knows that. We will have to wait and see at this year’s E3.

original seed, I thank you for your kind words. I appreciate your support and feedback and hope to continue creating entertaining articles that maintain the level of quality that you expect.

MattG, you never know man, you never know. After all, despite the fact that gamers thought that there is “no way in hell” that Final Fantasy XIII will ever appear on the Xbox 360, at the end of the day, it did. Lastly, let me ask you this; If Microsoft decided to top last year’s FF13 announcement, and blow everyone away this year with a similar megaton bomb, what would be better than Kingdom Hearts 3 coming to the Xbox 360 exclusively?

DaSolidProof, if Final Fantasy XIII, Square’s biggest franchise, is currently a multiplatform title, and Star Ocean 4, one of Square’s biggest franchises, is an Xbox 360 exclusive, then anything from Square’s library is possible to come out exclusively on the Xbox 360. In fact, the main reason they joined forces with Microsoft was to break through to the Western market, and Kingdom Hearts is the perfect franchise to use in order to break through to the Western market. After all, not only would it be an action RPG, which would be more appealing to the Western gamer than a turn-based RPG, but it would also be a game that includes the most popular characters in the West as a whole, Disney characters. Therefore, Kingdom Hearts 3 would actually be the perfect exclusive for Microsoft in North America. Again, that’s just my opinion and my prediction.

    God Bless You All

    Samo,

There is a difference between making a game multi-plat and making the same game exclusive. They may be friends with Microsoft this gen, but unless Microsoft slips them some serious cash under the table don’t expect them to make Kingdom Hearts exclusive to the 360. I highly doubt the game stays exclusive to the PS3, but I think with the PS3 install base improving there is no reason to move it way from the established platform (Sony).

They wont reveal Kingdom Hearts at this E3 because Nomura and the team are still working hard Versus XIII, and I think Square has learned not to announce their major titles and make people wait four-five years to get them. Now unless Microsoft slipped them $50 million for Kingdom Hearts exclusivity, I don’t really see them turning completely on Sony. The way Microsoft could surprise us all is to make Versus multi-plat, which is possible but improbable until next E3 IMO.

Also note that Nomura prefers the PS3 hardware, and I don’t think he has ever worked on a non-Sony machine so who knows where his mindset is at when it comes to working on the 360.

    MattG,

Microsoft has proven time and time again that they are willing to pay for exclusivity, and as I mentioned in my last comment, Kingdom Hearts 3 would be the perfect exclusive for Microsoft in the West. Thus, it would be worth paying for. As for Nomura, the idea of KH3 being announced in 2010 or beyond is only based on the fact that he will be developing KH3, which might not be the case. More importantly, given the fact that Square has many teams that have already worked on the Xbox 360, and are therefore, quite familiar with the hardware, there is always the possibility that Nomura is only overseeing the development of KH3 due to his dedication to the FF Versus 13 project. Meaning, KH3 might actually be outsourced to another internal team at Square. The fact that Nomura is overseeing the project would be more than enough to guarantee the game’s quality. After all, Sakaguchi did it with Blue Dragon, and Lanning is currently doing it with his next Oddworld game so that he can focus on directing Citizen Siege. On a side note, it was quite disappointing that this article was approved in less than 3 minutes but due to that, it wasn’t given enough time on the pending page to generate enough degrees to get on the front page of N4G and get a fair chance.
