Blue Omega Entertainment’s Damnation was released on May 26, 2009 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Now we’ve all seen our share of bad games in our day, but it’s sad when a group of people are fired over one. Major game sites like IGN, Gamespot, Gamespy, etc, didn’t hold their punches back when it came time to review the title and most, if not all of their readers felt the same.
According to an unconfirmed Twitter post from a Blue Omega programmer Geoff Rowland stated, ”The entire Blue Omega team was laid off today (well, starting Friday). If anyone has job openings, send them my way and I’ll pass them on,” It was unclear if Rowland was referring to the entire film-and-game production company or simply those employees who were involved in the game’s development. The rumor was later confirmed by Kotaku, stating there were “citing issues” with Codemasters, that range from behind-the-scenes lawsuits and disputes over cost development.
According to Gamespot, “The company filed a lawsuit against Point of View, a company it subcontracted for work on the game. The complaint states that Point of View violated its contract by seeking payment directly from Damnation’s publisher Codemasters. According to the suit, Codemasters “consistently was delinquent in making the payments it owed to Blue Omega,” and the direct payments would have enabled development on the game to continue despite the publisher’s refusal to pay its debt to Blue Omega. The suit alleges that Codemasters missed almost every payment deadline and that the publisher’s liaison to Blue Omega said the tardy financing was happening on a number of its projects.” If that wasn’t enough the sale figures for Damnation were poorly. My prayers will go out to the people who have lost their jobs at Blue Omega Entertainment.
