Review: Watchmen The End is Nigh Part 2

Posted by PAYBACK-IRONMAN | Microsoft, Real Talk with the HipHopGamer, Reviews, Sony | Wednesday 12 August 2009 10:34 pm

Watchmen The End is Nigh part 2 is the second part of the downloadable Watchmen game which was released earlier this year on the PSN and Xbox Live Arcade. Now I found the first episode to be quite enjoyable but it suffered from repetition and after a while it really lost its charm, unfortunately part 2 isn’t really all that different from its predecessor but there is still some redeemable qualities in this game.

When playing through Watchmen you’ll definitely be impressed by the visual quality of the game. For a downloadable game your getting top notch visuals in pretty much everything, from the grim environments to the character models this is what we’d want in terms of visuals for a downloadable game. The cut scenes in Watchmen are also very well done, simply because there told in a sharp comic book style and this is sure to be a plus for fans of the graphic novel.

The gameplay on the other hand is where the game falls flat. After the first few chapters of the game you’ll grow tired of beating up the same thugs and inputting the same combos over and over again. Playing as Rorschach and Nite Owl is enjoyable and each one has their own different fighting style which can make for some brutal and satisfying gameplay, you’re also able to play the game with another player via splitscreen but its a shame that there is no online play. Also the game only features 3 chapters which is less that the first game and they can be beaten in only 3 hours.

In closing Watchmen The End is Nigh could have been so much more. Its got great visuals but the gameplay is just to repetative it makes it hard to recommend to others. Its just a shame because the Watchmen license has great potential for a game but its unfortunate that the developers didn’t add more to make the gameplay as appealing as the graphics.

Grin is officially shutdown

GRIN_1250111051

Earlier this week there were rumors and speculation that GRIN was forced to shut down some of their smaller offices, unfortunately those rumors were true. Posted on the company’s website today was this message:

“It is with a heavy heart we announce today that GRIN has been forced to close its doors. This as too many publishers have been delaying their payments, causing an unbearable cash flow situation. After twelve years of hard work, employing hundreds of wonderfully talented men and women, it is over. It has been a great adventure and the GRIN family has experienced what few have.

Looking back at twelve years of games, titles such as Ballistics, Bandits, GRAW 1 & 2, Bionic Commando Rearmed, Wanted: Weapons of Fate, Terminator: Salvation, Bionic Commando and our unreleased masterpiece that we weren’t allowed to finish; it has been a great ride.”

It’s sad to see another game studio succumb to this rough economy, but there is still light at the end of tunnel for the guys at GRIN. It appears some laid off employees have already created their own studio, called OutBreak Studios. According to their official website, “We are dedicated to delivering games that uses new and exciting ways to play online.”  ”Our mission is to develop titles for Xbox 360 (XBLA), PS3 (PlayStation Store), Games for Windows Live, PSP Go and iPhone. We also deliver online components for AAA titles, both existing or upcoming.”

So congratulations to the ex-employees of GRIN and I wish them the best of luck.
