Simply put, Shadow Complex is one of the best 2D side scrolling games released in years and its easily one of the best games of the year so far. At 1200 Microsoft Points Shadow Complex boasts beautiful graphics, cool weapons and a lengthy story, the game completely raises the bar on what downloadable games can be and anyone with an Xbox Live Account needs to have this game.
Players will take control of Jason Flemming, the story starts when Flemming and his girlfriend are hiking in the woods and coincidently the two get separated and while alone Flemming discovers a secret underground military base and he notices that his girlfriend has been taken captive by them and of course its up to you to save her. When you first play Shadow Complex you notice the game is beautiful to look at, this is all thanks to the Unreal Engine which makes a successful transition into 2D style gameplay. The character models and environments are all highly detailed and the effects from the explosions and weapons look top notch as well and you’ll really start to notice this later in the game when the action gets more intense and you find more powerful weapons. Another thing that blew me away was the cutscenes, the cutscenes look like they could have easily come from a bigger budget title and yet you may have to remind yourself that your playing an Xbox Live Arcade title. They look that good.

The voice acting is also top notch, while your exploring the base you’ll come across some pretty funny dialogue between the enemy soldiers which helps bring a goofy but good story to life. The cutscene dialogue was very good too and I was just amazed by all the effort that was put into the script and not to mention that Nolan North, the man who voices Nathan Drake from Uncharted lends his voice to the main character Jason Flemming. Everything else from the weapon and explosion sound effects are great and it puts the audio of pretty much every other Xbox Live Arcade title to shame.
When playing Shadow Complex you easily see that it pays tribute to classics likeĀ Super Metroid. When you begin the game you start off with only a flashlight and a pistol and you’ll eventually acquire machine guns, rocket launchers and even a jet pack. Acquiring new weapons and gear allows you to explore areas that you may not have been able to before, so backtracking is definitely rewarding. Backtracking will reward you with things like power ups for health, grenades and ammunition which are essential to building up your characters because the game does get tough later on.

The controls in shadow complex are very simple, you move with the left stick and you aim with the right stick and thanks to an auto aim feature the controls are very simple learn, but since the enemies can appear in the back grounds or hallways coming towards you it can be a pain at times but trust me your frustrations will be very limited when playing this game. Also the map is very simple to to use and follow but sometimes you may get confused on what direction to take because the vents and hidden passages can be hard to spot at times.
Despite minor issues Shadow Complex is still an incredible game. Its pays tribute to the classics of the past and it boasts top notch production values in almost every corner and the game can take over 6 hours to complete which is very long for Xbox Live Arcade game. Shadow Complex is easily the best downloadable game released this generation and since it only costs $15 every one must own this game.
