First Things First Look At The Screens Below

For many years the PC gaming market was always considered the ELITE way too play your games. The PC gaming market always had the advantages in terms of going online gaming, upgradable systems, higher resolutions and more. The years of Playstation 2 and Xbox 1 was the beginning of the PC gaming market decline and the rise of the console take over why? because slowly and shortly PC gaming advantages started to disappear.

It started with Playstation 2 with the ability to play DVD movies, consoles started gearing up to be more like entertainment boxes for your living room and at that point the gaming market overall really opened up. The Xbox 1 following the introduction of DVD’s built-in a console they also capitalized even stronger featuring a full fledge harddrive in every system and the creation of true console online gaming in the form of XBOX LIVE.

These two factors that was introduced to console gaming was also the beginning of another revelation and that’s the decline in the PC gaming market. PC has great advantages Online, Harddrive , and multimedia but those were all acquired by consoles with the combination of Playstation 2 and Xbox 1. PC gaming slowly started getting exploited by these console competitors and the worst to come for PC’s happened in 2005/6 with the launch of Xbox360 and the Playstation 3.

The only advantages that PC gaming have now is the open network of development because of customizable machines which keeps PC’s at a maximum performance setting but the catch is the price you pay for that customizable machine with the maximum setting in which brings PC gaming almost to a complete halt why? because PRICE is always a factor and in this situation PC Gaming will soon be such a small market that dreamcast may pop in your mind in terms of results.

Sony Playstation 3 is $299 and you can receive graphic quality of this nature along with blu-ray playback, wi-fi, harddrive, internet, online gaming, media servers, and a more sophisticated library of games including exclusives.

This video clip alone shows that Heavy Rain’s graphic quality is on par if not better than anything out there including PC. The best looking PC game ever is Crysis and Crysis at maximum settings compared to Heavy Rain is at the same level or higher in favor of the Cell Processored Heavy Rain.

CRYSIS IMAGE

heavy rain images1

This is the nail in the coffin because crysis at it’s highest settings, the money you will spend on that type of machine will easily be anywhere from one thousand dollars and up whereas the Playstation 3 is $299 and that fact alone during this entire generation cycle. Sony along with Microsoft will destroy the PC gaming business even further, will it die NO! it won’t but it will surely be crippled. Heavy Rain says it all and that Sony exclusive alone is proof that Playstation 3 is the future.

    better than crysis?
i dont think so, you would hope so because this games been in development for what 5 years? but i doubt it.
the only reason pc gaming is falling short is because developers are getting greedy, its cheaper to release games on the 360/ps3.
all companys who use to be PC EXCLUSIVE! have now switched over.
    valve.
    crytek.
    monolith.
    ID software.
3D realms (were with DNF, but that did not finish get the pun?, and with DN3D on iphone & XBLA)
have all now crossed over to console development, and 99% of PC games are a cheap crappy port.
what was the last game designed for the PC and not a crappy port?
some would argue fear 2 but i have my doubts about that since its almost the same as the console versions.
theres new CPUs and new GPUs out every 6 months or so, the new intell I7s is there 1 program that makes use of the extra cores?
nope games are STILL using dual core processing there not coded for quad cores.
those new DX11 cards is there 1 game making use of their extra power?
    doubt it.
pc gaming is not expensive you just need to know how to build it yourself (piss easy) and where to get the parts.
i bought a PC for 1500 AUD which will run crysis on max settings.
thats dirt cheap considering how much more it will do over a ps3 or 360.
pc gaming is not expensive, thats just a excuse the fanboys use to diss PC gaming.
one thing you guys must remember is the 360 and PS3/ all consoles would not exist if it wasnt for the PC.
    so show some respect!

LOL if you call $1500 cheap well; I honestly dont know whether to question your mental state or if the resession has reached you. Honestly isnt it better to spend roughly £250 on a top end console that is basically a multi media haven and lasts an entire 10 year cycle and also belongs in your living room. Opposed to spending a fortune on a pc that requires constant updates and upgrades, which is quite frankly a hole in your pocket and a hassle. I have both but know what i prefer(BTW I wrote this all from my PS3 browser)

The PC will always have something the consoles never will, GOOD FUCKING CONTROLS.

    Also, hentai.

  4. Comment by BlackBond — August 24, 2009 @ 11:41 am

Okay your vids and articles used to be good but now they are just getting more and more into the Sony propaganda that its getting your quality way down.

PC gaming will always be leagues ahead of console graphics in visual quality. 360, PS3, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain it doesn’t matter. Consoles only have 512mb ram and that isn’t enough to run the latest and greatest games that PC has to offer. Heavy Rain doesn’t come close to Crysis and the fact that you think it does shows a level of Sony devotion that just isn’t healthy especially when you’re trying to be an objective site, which this isn’t anyway.

Anytime somebody is trying to compare console graphics to PC graphics its just going to end up an embarrassment.

Higher framerates, resolutions, player caps, mods, freedom, and less restriction are all advantages that PC has over consoles.

To say that it started with PS2 with the ability to play movies is hilarious. You say that like PC’s didn’t have DVD drives then. Next thing you know you’ll be saying that Blu-Ray is an advantage over PC gaming when PC gaming has bigger, larger, and more detailed games coming on DVD not Blu-Ray.

  5. Comment by BlackBond — August 24, 2009 @ 11:43 am

Oh and if you think PC gaming costs $1500 then you’re already ignorant to PC gaming and you should educate yourself on the matter before making baseless comments like that.

Wow… another article to add to the decade of articles claiming that PC gaming is “destroyed” or “dead” or “severely crippled.”

Every one of those articles was eventually proven false and this one is no exception.

The title of the article already dismisses all credibility. “Heavy Rain GRAPHIC QUALITY Destroys the PC Gaming Business.” So right off the bat, we’re assuming that the PC gaming business thrives solely on graphic quality? So as soon as a great-looking console game comes around, BAM, PC gaming is FINALLY dead?! Wow.

Then we’re using the fact that PS2s play movies… well good thing no computers before that were able to do that before.

And then we’re using the Crysis comparison again. That’s about as self-pwned as it gets. You’re basically jumping around saying “Look! It may have taken two years, but a console finally game out with a game that has comparable graphics!” Congratulations on that momentous achievement.

And it takes $1500 to build a good PC gaming rig? Maybe 10 years ago.

The whole “PC gaming is dead” may be a doomed argument every time, but if you’re gonna stick your neck out there, don’t look like an idiot.

  7. Comment by Lord_khronus — August 24, 2009 @ 1:40 pm

Does sony pay you for writing this? I accept Heavy Rain has outstanding grafics maybe better than some PC games, but better than Crysis HAHAHAHAH! I have seen the video I’m surprised about the quality but is that really a game? It’s not hard to make those grafics in a game made of QTE (Quick time events).
Crysis is a FPS you can destroy almost anything the physics are incredible and the graphics in the newest computers are like a film (almost)
PC will always have better graphics because upgrading is easier (not very cheap but easier)

The day the consoles have better graphics than the PC, that day the difference between consoles and PC will diapear.

P.D.: We have the best controls for FPS!

  8. Comment by craftlass — August 24, 2009 @ 1:53 pm

Now, if the PS3 included in their Bluetooth keyboard and mouse compatibility the ability to control games through those devices, that would close the gap even further.

That said, a good gaming PC is so much more than a way to play games. The same specs that make them work so well for games make them great for other activities, like graphic design/Photoshop projects, audio and video editing, and more. Even my now-”elderly” gaming laptop smokes a lot of current-model computers when it comes to these things.

There will be a place for both for a long time, no matter how comparable the graphics quality may be. There is a LOT more to games than graphics, for some of us (perhaps a lot) graphics are not nearly as important as gameplay and, while I love my consoles, it is marvelous to play games on the computer because the gameplay is often richer with the added controls afforded by the simple device of a keyboard. Some games just don’t translate well to consoles, some are better on them.

HipHopGamer, I fully understand your point, but I believe you’re missing the point of the rebuttal.

First off, let me agree with you that Fahrenheit was one hell of a game. I for one will be picking up Heavy Rain the day it is released, and the anticipation of this game is one of the primary reasons that I own a PS3 at all.

I realize that Heavy Rain’s graphic quality is top-notch but there are things to keep in mind, here. Picking Crysis to compare this game to is a bad idea. The on-screen polygon count isn’t even approaching that of Crysis. If you’ve paid attention to the interviews from the creator of Heavy Rain, he’s not shy in pointing out that the backgrounds and landscapes in the game are static, not rendered real-time, as the entire Crysis environment is. You’re basing your entire argument on the character models and nothing else, which is only a fraction of what Crysis is giving you.

You’re asking for a $300 PC that can portray Heavy Rain in the way that the PS3 does. That’s kind of a fruitless request since there’s no PC port of Heavy Rain available yet. I know that “to your knowledge” you’d be putting down $1,000 for a system that can do that, but that just proves that you either don’t game on PC at all, or you haven’t done so for years. You could go to newegg.com and build a PC for about $500 that could do it these days (remember Crysis is 2 years old… hardware is much more powerful and cheaper since then) though that’s still over your $299 mark. But what’s just as ridiculous is that you’re neglecting to consider that there’s no way the PS3 could play Crysis on the highest settings. And we’ll get a chance to prove that one, since Crysis 2 will be coming out on consoles, and guaranteed there will be articles comparing the PS3 visual quality to the PC quality on highest settings. And as with every single game before this, who do you think will come out on top, there?

As I pointed out before, proving that I did not miss the point, the single thing about your article that dismisses all credibility is the title itself. “Heavy Rain Graphic Quality Destroys The PC Gaming Business.” Right there, you are making the statement that the PC gaming business relies solely on graphic quality. Sure, that’s a plus, but find any true PC gamer and ask him why he plays on PC. I’m sure he will mention the visuals, but you’re also bound to hear a lot about control (mouse control for better FPS and RTS gaming), MOD community (just google “Oblivion mod” and stand back), and MMO play. We’ll get to see a bit more about console MMOs soon enough but without a keyboard, that could be a struggle when you gotta get things done fast.

I’m a big console fan and a big PC gaming fan as well, so I end up making arguments both ways depending on who’s making ridiculous claims. But if you’re going to post an article about the decline of PC gaming, you might want to look in the direction of maybe the influx of social networking to consoles. Maybe talk about the increased concentration on MMO development for consoles. But if you’re going to compare graphics to Crysis, you should’ve pulled out something like Killzone 2 with real-time rendered destructible environments, not a static adventure game. Your article points out that Heavy Rain has some of the most impressive visuals we’ve ever seen. That’s news to exactly no one, and it has exactly no relation to the PC gaming business at all.

  15. Comment by M337ING — August 26, 2009 @ 3:51 pm

Well-done response, blackbond. Although, I don’t expect hiphopgamer to even respond to your points concisely and intelligently, if at all.

I’ll boil it down to something he might understand:
Heavy Rain is focusing on rendering one character model in a highly limited environment that has no dynamic reactions or physics – every action you do has been pre-scripted by the developers.

In Crysis, you’re getting the same or even a higher level of detail in the character models, while being in wide-open environments that offer higher detail and are interactive – all at higher than 720p rez.

I’m sure someone like Epic could render a photo-realistic teapot on the 360 – doesn’t matter if everything else looks like crap.

  16. Comment by M337ING — August 26, 2009 @ 3:58 pm

And I figured out the real reason why you post such sensationalist crap:

Your website’s rankings are plummeting. Seems that people have finally wised up to your useless articles. So, how do you respond? By writing something even more ridiculous? Sure, you might get a boost in the short-term, but all you’re doing is destroying your own reputation.

I had a playstation when they first came out, then in 1999 i met my best friend….he laughed when i tried telling him the playstation was the best invention in the world (14 at the time), he said “come round to mine…ill show you something” and he did….unreal tournament and thief gold.
I felt violated, i swapped my ps1 for a monitor, keyboard, mouse, sound and graphics card…then two months later i paid around £100 for the other bits and bobs…i too could play these games now…and ive never looked back since.
I hear 30 year old men at work crying over the ps3’s…how great it is….but there too dumb to understand the concepts of quad core……sli…crossfire etc etc etc etc….
A high end gaming rig will set you back alot of money, but greedy show offs usually buy this equipment, i do not…i make my stuff last. I have a core 2 duo system that lasted 3 years, ive still got this system but recently purchased a mid range graphics card (4870) …and can play all games including cysis on the ultra high settings.
YOU DONT NEED TO SPEND THAT MUCH ON A DECENT GAMING PC!
But i have a couple of simple questions…..How old is crysis now?……..and how many players can you have on screen with action etc with hard rain?………

HGG isn’t saying that PC graphical quality is second to consoles.

He is stating that the console is destroying the pc gaming business because comparing the out of pocket expense it’s more worth gaming on a console for the quality that is given as well as the price point.

GET YAH HEAD OUT YAH ASS and stop defending things that don’t need to be defended.

  22. Comment by offwhiteazn — December 17, 2009 @ 2:01 am

    @robert
the reason why developers like to make games on the consoles is partially beacause of the fact that, on a console, the frame-rate is much more predictable than say on a pc. they know exactly how the game will run on the console they are developing for. and the fact of the matter is, there are much better games being made on consoles. of course that’s subjective but the majority of the population would agree with that statement. there’s also much more innovation occurring in the console market than the pc market. which is the result of more developers leaning towards developing on consoles. it’s a kind of snow-ball effect.

and don’t say consoles are for kids, that’s just ignorant.

  23. Comment by Goopy — December 18, 2009 @ 1:39 pm

Once again an ignorant console fan thinks that maintaining a good gaming PC costs the earth.

My current PC was just £500 – it can run any top game on maximum settings with graphics far better than an xbox360 or ps3 …and it can do a million other things. This machine will last me for the next 3-4 years without needing any upgrades and be able to scale down any of the top games in that time and still get the same amount of enjoyment out of them – unlike a consoler who has to buy another console in a couple of years when Bioshock 4 or Heavy Rain 2 comes out – me I’ll just tweak the graphic settings and still enjoy them.

By the time the console crowd have spent money on all their overpriced games (which are always about 25%-35% more on a console) and upgraded to the next ‘next gen’ machine they should realise its probably cheaper to have a gaming PC!

  24. Comment by Korny — December 21, 2009 @ 12:59 am

my my my…goopy goopy goopy….your $500 PC runs games better than any x360 or ps3…just listen to urself fool…these consoles even if less loaded with memory are totally dedicated to gaming…while ur pc has 3 zillion services running in background. The ps3 has an 8-cell processor…2 cells for the XMB…no problem…and where are u bro?still in ur dreams…u’ll tweak ur graphics settings cool enough… we’ll ditch another 300 bucks to buy another concole but then when u’ll frustrated of tweaking ur a** to play heavy Rain 2 or bioshock 4 on low settings, u’ll go dith another $500 to buy urself a decent PC. Ppl who buy Pcs for $1500 can brag about their PC for a long time…but don’t consider urself as being in the same category…u’d be fooling urself……bad…sorry man…and oh by the way…u won’t be playing heavy rain since it’s a pS3 exclusive…i’ll shed a tear for you then…naaaa jus kidding…lmao

What Korny above(comment 24)fails to realise is that some of us pc gamers own these consoles aswell, me being one of these people.I own both a 360 and a ps3 and i haven`t seen anything on either of them that even remotely comes close to what my pc can do.What i have seen is poor quality textures, clunky handicapped controls, low resolutions, extremely slow framerates, slow loading times and random servers being picked for me when i want to play a multiplayer game.
All in all after pc gaming, using a console always leaves me feeling very underwhelmed. It probably seems fantastic when thats all your used to but anyone that`s tasted the greatness of pc gaming knows deep down that these consoles just plain suck. Why did i buy them.Well theres a few exclusives i wanted that were platform specific and i`m not short of the green stuff so why not. They kill the odd half hour now n then.
Oh and i wont be buying heavy rain as my own personal protest at their removing its availability from pc.They wont care but i`ll still have my money to spend elsewhere.

Not even close man, if you’ve ever played Crysis at High/Very High Settings at a high resolution you wouldn’t be saying that. Not saying Heavy Rain doesn’t look incredible, not saying that the PS3 isn’t obviously the more capable console at this point, because it does look amazing and PS3 is superior.

But dude, think of it this way, ok. The RSX GPU in the PS3 is based loosely on a Nvidia 7800GTX. Its a 7xxx series GPU, and since the PS3’s launch, Nvidia has released a massively more powerful 8xxx series, 9xxx series, 2xx series, and is about to release their new Fermi based 4xx series. Nvidia’s new top of the line GPU the 285(I know about the 295, single card GPU only) is at least 8 times faster than the RSX, if not more. You can talk about the cell all you want, but PS3 is old tech. That makes it all the more amazing, what Heavy Rain does.

But visually destroys the PC Gaming industry? Not a chance.

  35. Comment by wolvojay121 — February 18, 2010 @ 8:13 am

I am sorry but there is NO comparison between console’s and PC’s, and as for saying that consoles have better graphics what a load of bullshit !!, My PC is running DX 11 while Xbox 360’s and PS3’s are still running DX10, i have seen games such as Resi 5 being played on a 360, and then ran the same game on PC and you could clearly tell the graphics on the PC were better. Also you have to understand that a PC, aswell as being a serious gaming machine can also do a shit load of other tasks, not only can i watch Blue-Ray movies on my PC but i can also burn them, can a PS3 do that?? aswell as countless other things, fact is you cannot compare a PC to a console because they are in 2 completely different leagues, I’m not biased towards a PC just because i don’t own a console, because i do, i am the proud owner of a 360 and i love it, especially since the release of MW2 but it still does not compare to my PC and thats the end of it really.

  36. Comment by Lou — February 22, 2010 @ 8:33 am

Console gaming is fun. PC gaming is fun. I like em both. I guess I prefer PC over console, cause I make money with my PC as well. People compare PC gaming to console gaming. I think they’re two different animals. Also, it’s not cheaper to play on console cause the games cost an average of $10 USD more, per game. Yeah, you can trade console games in. SO what. I buy a game, I keep it. So that doesn’t matter to me. I think these studios that restrict themselves to one platform are just basically cutting their own throat. I know several people, and I’m sure there are a lot more, that would buy those games if they were made for the platform they own, but they won’t go buy a whole new console, or build a big dollar PC, just for one game. If they do, they have more money than common sense.

I think one thing that all irrational console fanboys like Korny has to realise, is that PC components are more powerful. So first things first, HipHopGamer, i was linked to your article by another forumn. It seems you really stirred quite a storm with your topic. If im not wrong, HHG is just trying to point out the fact that for 200 dollars, you are able to get graphics as good as a PC. That is the statement that he is making. However, you over do it by saying “Quality destroys PC gaming business”. That word “destroy” should not be used by any means.

But anyway, on to the fanboys.
    ps3 – $299 dollars (its 499 in my country)
    PC – $500 (depends)
console users, please do not forgot about ur TV. as without a TV you would not be gaming.

Another factor, if we take apart the ps3 and look at its components, they are all out dated (more or less except for cell) as compared to PC components. Now why for PC’s we have to keep upgrading as compared to console users, is becuase the developers see that with the more powerful components, better visuals and graphics can be delieverd which is why they just leave it as it is. They dont try to scale it down because there is no reason to do so. As for consoles, hardware is there, developers have to do this ratio. The ratio of Visual graphics / hardware. They have to match the appropriate quality of graphics with the consoles. That is why, consoles do not have to upgrade very often. Probably new ones come out once every 2-3 years. (or was it 4?) anway, on a PC, if u buy a decent graphic card, lets say 300 dollars? It would last you 3-4 years plus being able to do work and a bunch of other stuff that a console is unable to do. You pay $299 for a ps3 to play games and watch blu ray. We pay $500 to play games at better graphics, to social network to develop software, edit pictures, set up the webpages that you are looking at right now. So, if you are a console user, u pay $299 for a console to play games, you would have to + about $500, to do work on a computer. Now, that is the appropriate comparison.

I am not undermining consoles however, i feel that theres alot of potential and fun when playing at friends houses :)

I am however, making this comments due to the fact that some of the commments above are pretty biased on the consoles. It seems the console users tend to trash talk more than the PC users. example, Korny.

Tbh, hard rain screens are mostly indoors or small scenes. Crysis include huge fucking forests / fields n shit in that quality.

Uncomparable tbh. It’s possible to make alot better graphics than that, but dont be expecting any huge scenes involved!

My pc has run games at higher graphics quality than a ps3 since I built it around the same time the ps3 came out. Heavy Rain consists of prerendered scenes with minor animation (a la Final Fantasy series), not exactly heavy for any system. The bloom effect used in game is an old trick used to cut down on the alaising that would otherwise be extremely visibly apparent and personally I hate that effect. It makes it look like your getting cataracts. The ps3 is a nice system but it is also an aging system, newer pc’s can be cheaper and perform so many more tasks than a ps3 (and without all the proprietary BS). The only thing a ps3 ever had over my pc was the blu ray player but now I added one to my pc so I can not only view blu rays but also create them and burn them.

This article is soooooo right because it’s IMPOSSIBLE to make PCs more high tech!!!!!! And considering that Crysis was released 3 years ago, I don’t think it’s a fair comparison. And by the way NO PC GAMES ARE $60, not to mention your online is crap.
