Defense Grid Review

Posted by PAYBACK-IRONMAN | Microsoft, Real Talk with the HipHopGamer, Reviews | Tuesday 8 September 2009 12:51 am

Tower defense games are certainly becoming some of the most popular games that are available for download on today’s gaming consoles. The latest to hit the Xbox Live Arcade is Defense Grid, which is easily one of the best strategy games on the XBLA and its one of the better tower defense games on the market.

When playing tower defense games you know the formula and Defense Grid is exactly what you’d expect. You’ll be setting up towers in order to dispose of incoming enemies, but this game however requires more strategy because in Defense Grid you aren’t able to create towers in any spot of the map. Instead you only have a select amount of spots on the map to create towers, so careful planning is definitely required. Also there’s ten towers to choose from and each has different range and fire power and as the game progresses the aliens get faster and tougher which makes selecting the right tower very crucial to completing levels.

In most tower defense games you have to defend a certain structure from being destroyed, but in Defense Grid things are a little different. Instead the aliens have to steal power cores from a main base and they have to carry them back to where they came from, if they take a core all is not lost because if you kill the alien that is carrying a core it drops it and the core will slowly float back to the base. If the aliens manage to acquire all the cores then your mission is lost, but all you have to do is hang on to one piece of the core and you’ll still win.

Defense Grid is also beautiful game to look at, each of the environments you’ll be eliminating aliens in all vary from dessert, winter to futuristic themes and each one features a different layout so no level will feel recycled. Going back to the visuals you’ll notice that the lighting and shadow effects all look great and the aliens themselves are also fairly diverse so be sure to use the zoom in feature to truly see how great the game looks.

Defense Grid features a 20 level campaign, as the game progresses the stages get bigger which makes for more paths for the aliens to take, so the challenge level that is known in tower defense games is present here. Defense Grid’s campaign also features a story mode which of course is about aliens that have invaded earth and in order to defeat them, the Defense Grid must be activated. The whole is story is explained during missions by a computer AI with a British accent, he’s both charming, helpful and he makes playing the game more enjoyable.

So overall Defense Grid is a great package at a great price. Its got amazing visuals and gameplay that are sure to challenge strategy fans and its continues the trend of must have games for the Xbox Live Arcade.
