SEGA developing PS3 port of Bayonetta
PS3 owners may find this news interesting or disheartening. The president and CEO of Platinum Games, Tatsuya Minami, attempted to ease the minds of PS3 owners regarding the issues of Bayonetta. Apparently the first reports of Bayonetta for the PS3 received some negative criticism. According to 1up.com, the PS3 version of Bayonetta suffers from frame rate drops, graphical issues, etc. Mr. Minami took notice of this discussion online and decided to address player’s concerns on the Platinum Games Blog. This is what the president had to say:
“Hello everyone.
It has been quite a while since I’ve blogged… Don’t think I’ve been resting on my laurels though. I’ve been quite busy with a number of projects here at PlatinumGames, and I haven’t had time to update my blog. For this, I apologize.
Thanks to all your support, our projects have begun to bear fruit. We released MADWORLD overseas earlier this year, a year which has also seen the Japanese release of Infinite Space. PlatinumGames has had its ups and downs getting to this point; however, I am extremely grateful to all those who have supported us along the way. As President of the company, I am also incredibly grateful to the hard-working staff inside the PlatinumGames offices.
And now the release of Bayonetta is fast approaching, isn’t it? But before it is in everyone’s hands, we have Tokyo Game Show on our plate. Bayonetta is a title that everyone at PlatinumGames has put their heart and soul into. We want everyone to give the game a try, and as such, we will be bringing it with us to the Tokyo Game Show.
Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Bayonetta will be in the SEGA booth. I hope you take the chance to check both of them out!
With Bayonetta, we created the Xbox 360 version of the game first, and then handed off all the data and other assets to SEGA so they could begin the process of porting Bayonetta to the PS3, giving them advice regarding the porting process along the way and overseeing the progress to ensure that the PS3 version would be the best it could be. The goal was to release the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions to gamers day and date, and even though there have been trials and tribulations along the way, we are incredibly pleased to be able to present two playable versions of the game on the Tokyo Game Show floor.
Recently, we’ve received questions whether there are any differences between the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. It seems many of you are quite interested in this.
As the developers of Bayonetta, we have overseen both versions, and I would like to make one thing clear. The Xbox 360 and PS3, as hardware platforms, both have their own distinct differences and peculiarities, and these characteristics will naturally give birth to differences in the final product. However, all involved endeavored to exploit the specific traits of each console to create an enjoyable experience. We feel the best way to evaluate this is by actually playing the game for yourself and coming to your own conclusions.
Bringing Bayonetta to users of both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 is something we feel to be very important, and I feel passionately that we have fulfilled our responsibility in that regard. I hope you all purchase Bayonetta and enjoy playing through our creation.”
Minami’s explanation (to me) was disheartening. It’s sad to see that they’re not going to have anything do to with the development process for PS3 version and it’s even more confusing that he admits that there’re going to be differences between the two versions, I hope it’s just the controllers. The TGS is next week where both versions will be playable, hopefully both will be identical, which I doubt after Miniami’s explanation. Keep hope PS3 owners, SEGA did an excellent job in developing Valkyrie Chronicles. What do you guys think about Minami’s explanation?

That ish is crazy! I don’t understand what is the love for Xbox 360 from some developers. Even with games like Uncharted series, Killzone 2, and Infamous you would think developers would jump on the wagon and make the game first on PS3. However, Sega did develop Yakuza 3 for PS3 and that game came out graphically impressive. Hopefully, Bayonetta looks impressive on PS3. If not, they just lost my pre-order.
The problem is developers choose the 360 over the PS3 to lead development on multiplats because it’s cheaper to develop and the PS3 is harder to develop on. Was I going to get Bayonette? yes. Will I still get bayonette if the PS3 gets a bad port. No
this is a case where the xbox not just having a hire attach rate of games and better online but yes it is easier to develop for. they may say the ps3 has more power but so what look what the wii did with subpar graphics. sold better.xbox…sells better. better marketing. reasons such as this a game is multiplatform and makes money for devs
I’m highly disappointed in Platinum Games, this is their first title for the PS3 and Xbox 360 and for them not to put to the same effort in the PS3 version as they did for the Xbox is just plain unacceptable. That excuse that the PS3 is hard to develop for is getting old and pathetic. I’m going to wait and see how the title turns out, before I say something I regret. Hopefully it turns out good. But Platinum Games definitely lost some cool points from my book.
Lets just wait what HHG says about PS3 Bayonetta during the Tokyo Game Show. Time will tell. I wonder how the Import of PS3 Bayonetta turned out. Its already out in Japan.
@johnnyshoulders
it comes out next month
@ DaSolidProof,,,oh, my bad. Your right about that. Got my dates confused. I keep thinking it’s October already. Anyway, hopefully this game comes out proper on PS3. I mean, Sega made Yakuza 3, and that game is exclusive to Playstation. They got to make this game hot! They should know how to port it properly.
@kloks4
Oh god man I can point out 3 or 4 things just wrong with what you said man.
It’s best if another studio focuses heavily on the PS3 version that way we see no compromises on either version. The art assets will be the same, but hopefully both will lean towards the strengths of their platforms
alright tell me why im wrong. im not bias but if xbox statistics get under your skin thats your problem i dont really care. but dont waste your time with why you love ps3 ha
@kloks4.xbox…sells better. better marketing. reasons such as this a game is multiplatform and makes money for devs.
Sells better. Hasn’t PS3 sold more units than xbox 360 in the same timeframe. Isn’t PS3 selling about double more than the 360 right now. Hasn’t the PS3 so far been beating Xbox 360 in sales for this fiscal year.
Given the lead the 360 has over the PS3, software sales on multiplats should be a lot more than what they are. Infact some Multiplat titles have sold more on the PS3 than they have on the Xbox 360/ Take GTA4 for instance
GTA4 on the 360 has sold 7.21 million copys. GTA4 on PS3 has sold 5.83 million copies. Xbox 360 has 8 million more users and it has exclusive DLC packs but it only managed to sell 1.4 million more copies on the xbox 360.
Xbox 360 is used as the lead platform, mostly because developers find it to hard to develop on and costs are cheaper for the xbox 360. Thats it. there is no other reason’s especially those rediculous ones you mentioned lol.
Statistics don’t get under my skin.But how clueless some people are especially ones that want to pull statistics gets under my skin.
@ blazeitup
well thats too bad cuz the playstation isnt winning bottom line.why waste my time against your linear point of view it really doesnt matter to me ha i just like to hear pathetic fanboys like you play “mines bigger” when it really isnt.
Ah you are a stupid mother fucker arn’t you kloks4. I’m not getting into this with an arrogant little shit. I’m off to play the Uncharted 2 beta. Try play that on your Xbox
theres nothing to get into man ha i spoke the bottom line. uncharted is cool however if i could play it on my xbox i would ha!!
