Microsoft On Shaky Ground While Sony Is On The Rise
Microsoft is a force to be reckoned with in this industry especially since the 2005 debut of the Xbox360. They were the first to come in the market, introducing Hi-Definition gaming content on a console, offering the definitive online experience and a major feature that has become the sleeper hit of all time and that’s ACHIEVEMENT POINTS.
Microsoft knew the competiton from Sony wasn’t too far away so they prepared for battle early and for a good year and a half it seemed as if this console war was over by a slaughter but slowly and gradually things started to change. The first major impact that Sony had was winning the format war over HD-DVD, then came the first price cut, Now the games are becoming big leaps over the competition, and the main thing that’s left is additonal features to the online service.
Microsoft appears to be on shaky ground and the video article below will expose everything in great detail so make sure to leave a ton of comments and realize that the console war is officially heating up.

Very good analysis. The only thing I disagree with you on is if Sony will win outsell the competition eventually. I think that they will, for 2 reasons: Blu-ray and exclusives. In the next 3-5 years, more and more people will get HDTVs and I think gamers will chose PS3 for games while casual gamers will pick up the PS3 instead of the Xbox 360 because of Blu-ray.
I like your show, you make some valid points, and I think the way you put things into perspective by comparing LIVE and PSN is especially interesting. PSN may indeed “meet and exceed” LIVE based on the fact that it will (probably) still be free once all the features are up to par. The Question is; is it sustainable? Will Sony make enough money to be able to keep providing a service like that?
Also, your perspective on the market potential for Natal vs. the Wand, was spot on.
One thing though; you should have your bullet points visible to us viewers too. That makes it easier to keep track of what you’re talking about, especially in really long articles like this one. Plus, if you could have your bullet points set up like a teleprompter next to the camera you wouldn’t have to look away as much.

1) in the UK sky TV is free to anyone on a multi room subscription or sky broadband connection.
2) sky TV on xbox provide LIVE premiership football (for americans which is the highest viewed thing in the country and costs ALOT of money to view e.g. on sky it pushes 35 pounds per month to view).
3) Play TV does not provide this all it provides out the box is FREE TO VIEW channels, which everyone has the only thing it adds is recording/pausing.
4) sky TV on xbox has on demand programs/movies, so if you miss anything you can watch them again at no added charge.
5) it would simply be impossible to provide the channels sky tv provides for free on any device, when you look at the content they have available on these channels.

Hiphopgamer, NATAL is using infered lights with other lenses to create a 3d room. Now it tracks your movement in 3-Dimensional calculating velocity, acceleration, and position accurately.
Playstation eye is just a 2-d camera that uses simple pixel location on screen to see where your hand is at. It doesnt calculate the velocity and acceleration hence it is not 3d.
NATAL has:
1)Voice Recognition for up to 4 people!!!
2)Face Recognition
3)No need for headsets since NATAL can take your voice and cancell out background noises
4)Internal powerful cpu that DOESNT take cpu power out of the 360. Playstion eye takes cpu power out of the playstation.

2010 is when both companies will step up face to face in games and content. Comparing Sony and MS now is no fair comparison. 2009 MS didnt push anything so why compare them to sony who cleary pushed what they have this year.

I’m glad you got back to us with a point for point SKYTV VS PlayTV comparison. And with bonus console VS console as well. I feel the same way.
MS is getting real shaky with their offerings and I’m also getting tired of paid for features. Why aren’t any of these paid for features available for use on a silver account? It’s absurd that we HAVE to pay for live just to use NetFlix, FaceBook, Twitter, SkyTV or Last.fm.
1. SkyTV = Pay for Live, Pay for SkyTV
2. NetFlix = Pay for Live, pay for NetFlix
Why would you do these two things on the 360 when you only have to pay once for them on your computer or whatever SkyTV uses? That’s just fucking ridiculous!

@ Maini8000 – PlayTV is better because all the service would need is companies partnering up with them to expose their content to a wider audience. This about it, let’s use NBC as an example. If NBC is offered only in America and only on television, imagine what PlayTV could provide for them. An internet audience from around the globe. Which in turn provides for more advertising opportunities. PLus people will go for PlayTV more so because it’s free!

I think you hit the nail on the head. Sony and the PS3 is getting better and the Xbox 360 is pretty much staying the same. Just think how many recent game were the best looking game on PS3 when they were released, Uncharted, Killone 2, Uncharted 2. What game is going to be next “best looking game ever” God of War III, Killzone 3, Grand Turismo 5? What was the last 360 game to be the best looking game on Xbox 360? The answer is Gears of War, two years ago. What game is going to clealy pass Gears of War?????? I don’t know.
Maybe Natal will show some forward movement in gaming. So far, however, Natal hasn’t shown anything that has not been done before on Eyetoy.
On top of all this is the most important fact. The PS3 costs the same amount as the 360 with a hard drive(which is the real market-accepted price). An Xbox 360 needs to be cheaper than a PS3 if it wants to sell more.
I agree with you on NATAL. Its just a better eye toy. Most gamers will agrree with me when i say this “we need a PHYSICAL OBJECT to play a game.” Sony tried to do something like NATAL but it failed. Then they come out with the Motion controller and i think this will please the casual gamers.

Sony doesn’t have to match what xbox live has, they just need to keep providing it for free, because everything that gets put into it is just like more gravy. They pretty much offer what’s important, and besides to everyone talking about having to buy your own headset, blah blah blah cause Sony didn’t put them in the box, that is a trivial complaint (especially considering all the money that has to come out your pocket when you’re supporting 360 either as your sole console or main option as a multi-console owner). So, if you have a 360, you know what I’m talking about: more than one gamer in your place you pay for each LIVE account, you pay for LIVE and then have to pay for the additional features for LIVE (hell if your taking advantage of everything 360 can do, you might already be paying $100 a year, forget in a couple years). It didn’t take me long to realize that PS3 out of the box is a better value, even back when it was $600, the potential was always there, and now they are finally delivering on it, and hopefully continue to do so. Eh, but what do I know, I’m just a consumer.

NATAL has a cpu built in. It’s been known for a while. But not suprisengly you have no knowledge in what you are talking about.
Playstation eyetoy CAN NOT do 3-dimensional body tracking movements. The only thing it tracks is the little ball on the wiimote copy cat.

1.) I don’t even know what facts you are talking about. I never once mentioned in my previous comment that PSEye was getting any update. It’s all about the software, how the PS3 processes it, and utilizes the PSEye in conjunction with it. Look it up for yourself. There are tons of videos depicting facial recognition for PS3.
2.) I asked you for the proof of the CPU in Natal. Still waiting…

@ Mani8000 – Some people actually do understand the importance of Futbol for the UK. At least I do, but saying that Futbol is a big reason SkyTV is popular, is the subject of your personal opinion. The fact of the matter is, SkyTV may give us that option, but not everyone likes Futbol as much as you. So, they’ll use it for other reasons. Besides, why would you pay for your television service, then pay for your SkyTV just to enjoy Futbol? Seems pointless unless SkyTV was free, but it’s not. And what’s to stop PlayTV from offering something like that? In fact, maybe one of the channels viewable through PlayTV will be a sports channel. And, as you know, PlayTV is free and you’re not limited to your living room which makes PlayTV all the more relevant. Plus the recording feature. What sports fan wouldn’t want to record their favorite games?

@ Poster 19 – If you’re having that many connection problems with your network, maybe you should contact your internet service provider. The only time I ever get disconnected is when Sony randomly decides to run maintenance. Or when I’m playing a game where the room/map I’m currently on is hosted by someone other than myself.

1)No software updates can mimic what NATAL is capable of. Ps eyetoy is just a single simple lense that is like a regular camera. It cant do the complicated calculations NATAL does.
NATAL uses a infered lens and other lenses to create a 3-Dimensional space. It can then track up to 4 players at once no matter if theyre in front of each other. Also it tracks 48 joints on a single human body to create fully body controlled recognitions.
2)NATAL has been know to use the internal cpu. Do some research Im not wasting time to prove you something that is already known. Why the f*ck you think its going to cost $150+.
3)Using the wiimote copy cat is not a fully 3-dimensional function. Its just tracking the wand. The ps eyetoy is NOT capable of tracking your body as well for 3-dimensional tracking.
NATAL can not only track your every single body movement, it can track your face, voice, and even hand gestures. It can detect individual fingers for commands.
4)I said MS was owning 2006-2008 because they were releasing BIG games for those years that they planned. In 2009 they werent hyping it up to be like the past years. Why do you think their motto this year was to announce things for 2010 to create the hype in 2009. Just because they released a year before the ps3 doenst state the fact that they had to release AAA’s every year. There will be a year that wont be as great as before. Hence it took ps3 3 years to have a great year. Xbox 360 had its great year started 1 year after release.
Just because the ps3 had a great year this year and MS had their first decent year DOESNT mean that its over for MS.

The reason 2009 didnt have any BIG titles is that after so many years there’s got to be a break. Developers cant push out AAA’s every year. 2009 is just the year where Bunge, Lionhead, Rare, EPIC, etc etc are developing their next AAA for 2010 and beyond.
Turn 10 is the only developer to release a big AAA for MS but since it’s a racing game it won’t compare fairly to Uncharted 2 or Killzone 2 which were AWESOME!!!!! (Uncharted 2 GOTY)
Got to love debates like this. If we didnt have different opinions then this industry would be boring.

@ higherARC – I’ll respond to your number with my numbers:
1)You yourself said that Natal uses it’s own CPU and that PSEye uses the PS3 CPU. Honestly, which one works better, the little processor for Natal or the Cell Broadband Engine? – Tough choice, I know. The PSEye is also caplble of tracking more than one person at a time and with the introduction of the motion controller, it’s perform that much more accurately than Natal can ever do.
2)I did the research and both cameras do the same exact things. In fact, the only two differences between the two is that:
2a) Natal has a frame rate of 30 hertz and the PSEye has frame rates of 60 hertz at a 640×480 pixel resolution, and 120 hertz at 320×240 pixels(Not even going to ask which is better here) &
2b)Natal uses “custom processor running proprietary software” while PSEye relies on the PS3’s engine and software capabilities. Which brings me back to my question in point 1 – “Honestly, which one works better, the little processor for Natal or the Cell Broadband Engine?”
3)The research speaks for itself. They can both track in 3 dimensions. Don’t believe me, run a Search for Project Natal on Wikipedia.org and also PlayStation Eye and compare them yourself.
4)Of course Microsoft will own in 06-08 since PS3 was just released. EVERYONE knows that. As for 2009, there were a few games for MS, including Halo Wars, Halo 3: O.D.S.T.& Forza 3. Allan Wake and Splinter Cell Conviction was pushed to 2010 meaning it was a 2009 planed release.
Face it, MS failed in 2009. And it would seem their marketing strategy worked seeing as you see it as hyping the future. No one claims failure, ESPECIALLY Microsoft.
And yes, you’re right, MS doesn’t have to make triple A titles every year, but the fact that the have more developer loyalty than PS3 and a year head start means they should at least win every year. So, MS failed in 09. Also I never said it’s over for MS because PS3 had a great year.

look i value anyones point and i understand others perspectives or else i wouldnt watch the vids n read the articles and i really dont have to prove myself nor do i care but im not wrong to disagree on anything if its in favor of xbox or playstation i do understand this is a pro playstation site more than anything so in fashion of hhg ill say as i please. sony does have great games but whats past spring 10? just assumption so far for microsoft we know a few things.

1)Listen. A cpu that is specialized in doing the calculations is always more efficient than having a external cpu to run what its trying to do.
Hence a Hardware Tessellator is way more efficient than emulating tessellation on the cpu and gpu.
Also when you use the cell in the ps3 for the tracking of the wand, you are taking cpu power from the game.
NATAL has it’s own RAM and CPU to do the processing neccessary for the 3-Dimensional tracking WITHOUT taking resources from the XBOX 360/Games.
2)a)Where did you get that 30hz? I heard from a demo from E3 that it was running at 60hz. If you have proof than thanks for the update. But then again NATAL isnt finished. Its in pre-alpha stages.
b)That “custom processor running proprietary software” is a very power cpu. Research Z-camera which is the technology that MS aquired when they bought the license for the 3-Dimensional tech.
Its way more powerful and efficient than using a engine that isnt specifically used for 3-Dimensional processes.
Emulating it on the cell isnt as good as a dedicated hardware/software for NATAL’s capabilites. I know programming and engineering im in college for it so learn.
3)Ps eyetoy DOES NOT track 3-Dimensional movement. It uses a single lens to locate the pixels on a 2d plane. It cant and wont track 3-Dimensional movements. It cannont track the acceleration, velocity, and depth of field of any object EXCEPT the wand which is why is has a ball on it its the same tech as mocap.
NATAL uses multiple lenses. One is a infered lense that sends out infered lights and recieves it. This allows the camera to work in any light conditions, unlike eyetoy. The other lens are used to create the 3-dimensional room and objects.
You see NATAL can scan objects and use them as controllers. I can grab the ps wand and NATAL can scan it and I can use it as a controller.
Research a little better you are just spuing out false and incredibly incorrect answers.
4)MS should at least win every year. Dont try to spin this off on MS when it has happend to sony too.

Halo Reach is Bungie’s next big game since Halo 3. They have been working on it since 2007. The engine they are using for Halo Reach has been in research and development since 2005.
Also you saying Halo 3: ODST was a fail makes you a fail. Now I know you are a sony fanboy. It’s a great game that did so much more than most shooter released this year. A huge open city to explore with procedure enemy patrols and Firefight was just simply AWESOME. It has AAA reviews for a reason.

1) Even if the CPU of Natal is specialized to do what it does, which CPU is more powerful? The cell may not be specialized to do what Natal’s CPU is designed for, but there’s no doubt it can do it. In terms of taking away CPU power from games, that goes right back to the cell being much more capable than Natal’s CPU…
2a) If you run a search n Wikipedia for “Project Natal”, you’ll see this information for yourself.
2b) Are you seriously saying that the CPU for Natal is more powerful than Cell?

In reference to your 2009 list, the only great games here are Halo 3 O.D.S.T., Left 4 Dead 2 and Forza 3. Halo was only good for it brand name, game play was nothing new. Left 4 Dead 2, same as Halo, nothing new besides a story. And Forza 3, which in my opinion is their best game this year. Halo Wars, garbage, Show Complex, meh, GTA IV: BoGT, expansions are nothing new, just a new short story to enjoy.
Now, instant 1080p stream, FaceBook, Twitter and Last.fm are till not here so, opinions can be a little shaky. But, from what we’ve seen and know(Based on fact):
1) 1080p instant streaming is not possible for everyone at any given time. And as HHG mentioned, it doesn’t get better than a movie that doesn’t require internet connectivity to watch and has all the features of a retail release, like deleted scenes and whatnot.
2) FaceBook is ALREADY possible on the PS3, since day 1 and for free. With 360 you’ll need to pay for Live just to use it.
3) Twitter is just like point 2. Why would you pay to use these services can can be accessed for free EVERYWHERE else?
4) Last.fm, in my opinion is 360’s best feature. The only problem is:
4a) Just like FaceBook and Twitter, it can be accessed for free, but not on 360 and…
4b) You can’t use it in the background. Hopefully, the update that…

My mistake on Bungie making 2 games, the only made 1.Halo Wars made by Ensemble Studios not Bungie, you’re right there and Halo 3: O.D.S.T. was made by Bungie. I never said that O.D.S.T. was a fail. But, now that you bring it up, what was great about that besides Fire Fight? You can be an MS fanboy and know that the games was nothing new. Its just like Halo 3, which was 2 years ago.
