Joystiq has obtained an internal IGN memo sent by company president Roy Bahat announcing layoffs at the media site today. We currently have no accurate estimate for the number of people let go today, nor do we know if any divisions have been shut down entirely.

Bahat states in the memo, "We're doing this to reduce costs. While we've been doing well -- we're profitable and our audience continues to grow -- we're still feeling the effects of the economy, and we need to make sure we can invest where there is opportunity. Sony showed off a bit of 3D tech at GDC last week, and Ian Bickerstaff, senior engineer with SCE’s UK-based 3D team, told Gamasutra that the company’s very optimistic about the tech, but it’s also remaining “cautious”.

“We’re taking a cautious approach”, he said. “I think [3D gaming uptake is] going to depend on the uptake of 3D televisions. “We’re not going to spend crazy, crazy amounts of money expecting everyone tomorrow to have 3D TVs, clearly, but, we believe this is the future, and three or four years from now, you won’t be able to buy a television that doesn’t have a 3D capability.

Gears of War 3 hasn’t been announced yet, but it is set to be released in April 2011, the eighth to be exact.

That’s according to a report from Edge, citing a “trusted US publishing source” as the origin.

The report also says a teaser will be released next month, April 8: bang on one year before the game’s tentative date.


The first big noises made of the sequel was at Tokyo Game Show last year, when Epic president Michael Capps said the game will be released within the next-gen of consoles, before retracting his comments.
